Current proposed legislation, for instance, aims to protect formula manufacturers from litigation when babies have bad outcomes. That doesn’t seem right. See https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/2300/text for more information.

Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin, and the regulating and accrediting body for milk banking, the Human Milk Banking Association of North America, work to educate our elected officials throughout the country about intended and unintended consequences of these bills.

Every lawmaker is unique, with their own priorities, values, and areas of focus. That means we tailor our approach when speaking with them. For those with medical backgrounds we can dive deeply into the studies that show that babies born under 1500 grams need human milk only in order to have the least likelihood of experiencing Necrotizing Enterocolitis, an inflammatory condition of the intestines that comes with a high rate of fatality. For those with legal backgrounds, we focus on the impact of legislation that would limit a family’s ability to seek justice.

Regardless of background, most lawmakers can understand that putting babies at risk is bad, especially when that risk is avoidable by promoting breastfeeding and providing Pasteurized Donor Human Milk when mom’s milk is unavailable. And most can appreciate that nonprofit milk banks, regulated by the US FDA and HMBANA, have been providing safe donor milk with zero negative outcomes since 1985. And importantly, these same lawmakers are now aware that there is ample Pasteurized Donor Human Milk to feed all vulnerable babies in all US NICUs.

This work is about creating lasting positive change for families, and that improves health outcomes of vulnerable babies.

Research shows that most babies born after an unmedicated labour, when provided with a period of uninterrupted skin to skin with their mother, will navigate themselves to, and then latch on to the breast within an hour of birth.

Creating an opportunity for interrupted skin to skin after birth is the best way to support this mind blowing process happen.

Research has also shown that immediate skin to skin increases the chances that babies are breastfed, extends the length of breastfeeding, and also helps to improve rates of exclusive breastfeeding.

If this period of skin to skin wasn’t possible for your baby and you, all is not lost! Skin to skin continues to be beneficial, and can help get feeding back on track, as well as promoting bonding.

Please get in touch if you need a hand with feeding your baby at any stage.

With huge thanks E, W & for letting me use this amazing image.

📉 BUSTING the "Only 5% women can’t make enough milk" myth! 🚫

You’ve probably heard it before: “Only 5% of women can’t produce enough milk.”
But that number? It’s not what you think.

That stat you see everywhere? It’s misquoted. It’s used out of context. And above all, it’s misleading. The original source? A vague textbook quote from the 1980s—with no actual research cited. 😳

Here’s the real deal:
The quote that started it all: “it appears likely that 1 to 5% of women experience lactation failure on a physiologic basis.” - Marianne Neifert, LACTATION: Physiology, Nutrition, and Breast-Feeding (1983)

🧠 The “5%” refers only to complete milk production failure due to physical gland issues
👶 It doesn’t account for baby-related issues (like tongue tie, weak suck, latch struggles, prematurity, etc)
⚠️ It ignores lactation management problems like fl**ge fit, delayed feeding, birth trauma, or hormonal complications
📢 The truth is: low milk supply is real, and it’s NOT always your fault. You are not making it up. You’re not broken. And you’re definitely not alone. 💗
✨ If this myth has ever made you doubt your body, question your instincts, or feel ashamed, you deserve better.

💬 Comment “blog” and I’ll send you the full breakdown. Let’s replace shame with science and empower real families with real facts.

➡️ Because informed parents feed with confidence. Always.
