Hello everyone! I think that this is important information. Functional Medicine has been teaching this for years but traditional western medicine has been stuck in the past. In spite of research that demonstrates the opposite, they continue to teach in med school and the doctors that are in practice are still stuck in the old cholesterol/heart disease concept. Take a look at this it’s a good read.

Low cholesterol levels are associated with atherosclerosis, which nullifies the conventional recommendation to decrease your cholesterol as much as possible.

I have been a long time advocate of regular exercise. Even in my own personal life, I’ve made it a habit for many years of exercising a minimum of six days a week. I try to get in three days of fairly rigorous exercise, elevating, my heart rate and sustaining it to 70% to 80% of my maximum cardiac output. 2 to 3 days of resistance training is essential as well to maintain muscle and bone health and strength. Sitting, or today’s desk chair, is yesteryears cigarette when it comes to damage to your health. This article will give us some ideas, and I hope that you enjoy it. It’s easy, just get up.

This is a growing problem nearing epidemic proportions. There are various causes but most come down to following the standard American diet. You’ll notice the acronym is SAD and that is so true. About age 2 there is a setpoint in the brain that remembers the body weight/fat percentage and strives to maintain that throughout life. It also modifies the gut Microbiome with the type of gut bacteria that strive also to maintain the body fat percentage at higher levels and is deficient in those that maintain a lean body mass. Create an obese 2 to 4-year-old and you have obesity problems for most of his/her life. if you suffer from this or if you have or know of children that suffer from this, please help them take appropriate measures to correct it.

Rates of severe obesity among children are climbing high, and this condition is linked to higher risk of diseases.

Today I am posting an excellent article. It may be over the head of the average individual not versed in biology and or physiology, but I think the general concepts can be understood. What it comes down to is what we have been preaching now for about 10 years as we have improved our understanding of the gut and tissue Microbiomes. It comes down to Endotoxemia, the primary cause of most metabolic disease. Fix your gut and fix your health from cancer to diabetes and more. If you want to know how please contact me.

Thyroid Awareness Month!
Thyroid autoimmunity is the most prevalent and dominant autoimmune condition. Understanding the gluten-thyroid connection can lead to better symptom management with diet and lifestyle.

It’s important to understand what gluten is to fully understand how it can create a toxic response in people with autoimmune disease, especially those with thyroid disease.

Wheat is made up of multiple gluten and non-gluten proteins, peptides, wheat germ agglutinin and enzymes. This multitude of antigens are responsible for many other autoimmune conditions. Gluten is found in grains like barley, rye, and wheat.
It’s a staple in the Western diet that you’ll encounter in most breads, cereals, pastas, processed foods, and other hidden ingredients. Non-food items including certain low quality vitamins and supplements, personal hygiene, and cosmetic products may contain gluten.

If you have a thyroid autoimmune condition gluten can trigger inflammation, and barrier breakdown, leading to gut dysbiosis. Autoimmune genetic predisposition can also prompt gluten reactivity. This response is like "turning on a switch." Once the switch has been turned on it can't be turned off.

Other symptoms include:
Gastrointestinal distress (including IBS or Celiac Disease)
Acid reflux
Brain fog
Hair loss
Weight gain/loss
Cold intolerance
Anxiety
Joint pain
Fatigue
To properly assess wheat and gluten reactivity a full array of antigens must be measured.

Many people struggle from GERD or some form of acid reflux. There are many misconceptions about underlying causes and treatments, most of which are wrong. Here is an article from Body Health that gives a pretty good idea of correct concepts concerning this condition.

WHAT CAUSES GERD, HEARTBURN & ACID REFLUX

When we eat, our stomach secretes digestive acid and enzymes. These are necessary to break down the food into a form the cells can use, break down minerals so they can be used, and kill off harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites coming in through food and water.

All of these are very important.

Now, there is something called the PH scale, going from 1-15, with 1 being the most acidic and 15 being the least acidic.

The stomach secretes acids until it hits a ph of about 1 or 2 (very acidic). Hitting this point signals that the food is ready to move on into the small intestine, which opens to let it in.

However, if the stomach doesn’t reach this level then the food can stay in the stomach longer and go rancid (if you drank milk and then looked at it in the stomach it would look like cottage cheese, not milk anymore).

When it goes rancid it can start to bubble up and hit the esophagus. While the stomach is made to withstand a very acidic environment, the esophagus is not, so it burns.

It can get so bad that the valve between the stomach and esophagus becomes degraded and may start to let acid in with or without food in the stomach just because you laid down or bent over.

But it does more than that.

The PH scale is not a straight scale upwards. It goes up by multiples of 10. So a ph of 2 is 10 times less acidic than a ph of 1. And a ph of 3 is 10 times less acidic than a ph of 2, or 100 times less acidic than a ph of 1. Then when we see that many people today have a ph of 4 or 5 — 1000 to 10,000 times less acidic than what is needed — we see how easy it is for acid reflux to occur.

So look at this. It’s supposed to be at about 1 or 2 to kill off all harmful bacteria and fully break down food and minerals so they can be used. But if it’s at a 4 or 5 this is 1,000 to 10,000 times less than what is needed here.

Until this is fixed, and the ph level lowered to a more acidic environment, GERD, heartburn, and acid reflux will continue, no matter how many pills you take. And the pills will make it worse.

This also leads to bacteria making it through to the small intestine where they take root, eating your food and giving gas in return that makes you bloat. They also cause inflammation which can give you stomach pain or even pain in your muscles when these bacteria get into the bloodstream.

It also lets parasites through, which will take root.

And it can get so bad that the stomach itself is so non-acidic that bacteria can start living there, breaking down the cells of the stomach walls and causing much more trouble.

HOW TAKING ACIDS BLOCKERS OR NEUTRALIZERS FOR TOO LONG DESTROYS OUR DIGESTIVE TRACT AND OVERALL HEALTH

Antacids operate by neutralizing the acid in your stomach and so raising the ph level. This then alleviates the pain of heartburn or GERD as it’s less acidic. But it also lets through these harmful bacteria and prevents food breakdown, including protein breakdown.

And your stomach acid is made from… the amino acids in protein. If they’re not fully broken down then your body can’t use them to make more stomach acid and we get a continued lowering of stomach acid production over time, leading to a less and less acidic environment so we take even more antacids.

Acid Blockers or PPIs are a bit different. PPIs stands for Proton Pump Inhibitors. The Proton Pumps are the glands that secrete stomach acid.

PPIs operate by poisoning these so they produce less acid, so they literally can’t function as they’re supposed to.

Now, if someone has something like a bleeding ulcer, an actual wound in the stomach, these can be necessary as we need to lower the acid levels so the wound has a chance to heal.

But once it’s healed up we need to come off them and build back up our stomach acid levels or we’ll be causing ourselves a lot more trouble than just a wound in the stomach.

As PPIs operate by poisoning the glands that secret acid, over a long period of time these glands can become so damaged that even when we come off the PPIs it takes a long time for the glands to heal so they produce acid properly. The longer we’ve been on the PPIs, the longer it takes the glands to heal if they even fully can at that point.

So this is very important. Only take them when actually needed, no longer.

HOW WE ADDRESS ACID REFLUX, HEARTBURN & GERD

If we have Acid Reflux, Heartburn or GERD then we have lower levels of stomach acid. Period.

So first, we need to get off any acid blockers, antacids, and even soda water, which also lessens acidity.

We then need to start taking digestive enzymes to provide the Stomach Acid and Enzymes the stomach needs to fully break down food and kill off bacteria and parasites coming in. Because if we have one of the above situations then we already know we don’t have enough.

Next, we need to start getting in more protein and taking the enzymes to ensure it’s broken down fully so the body can use it, as it’s protein that the body uses to make more stomach acid and digestive enzymes. If we don’t do this then the situation will continue indefinitely.

This is also one place PerfectAmino becomes very important. It not only provides the amino acids from protein necessary to produce more enzymes and stomach acid, but it also helps to heal the cells injured by the effects of low stomach acid.

TYPE 2 DIABETES AND TOXINS

An increasing concern among the health care community, is the continued rise in the occurrence of Type 2 Diabetes. Several concepts and treatments exist from both a traditional as well as a functional medicine perspective but is there a difference. Is one better than the other?

As is usually the case, from the functional or systemic treatment, the underlying cause as well as lifestyle changes are at the root of the solution. In traditional medicine, unfortunately, the solution is more of what types of medication seem helpful in lowering A1c instead of understanding what seems to drive the condition. What drives the condition has undergone extensive research and some new players are receiving some attention.

EDCs or Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals are substances (man-made or natural) that alter endocrine function. The endocrine system is the hormone system of the body and impacts many physiological functions. EDCs are so prevalent in air, water, soil and everyday products that they affect the majority of the world’s population. Bisphenol A (BPA), a commonly found EDC, was detected in 93% of the general population in the US. 93% Can you imagine. It is not a question of “if” you have been exposed but how much?

To make a comprehensive list of EDCs that are common to our community would go beyond the scope of this article but let's talk about some of the more common effects of exposure especially to 2 classes of EDCs called “persistent organic pollutant” or POPs and metabolic-disrupting chemicals or MDCs. These chemicals, in very small amounts, (we are talking about a couple of drops in a swimming pool for some) interrupt and interfere with the physiology of the cells leading to type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, chronic fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, cancer, infertility……. And more.

“But my water bottle is BPA free!” you shout defensively, and that may be better but it may actually be worse. There is also BPS and BPAF. They don’t tell you about those and studies show that they are just as harmful as BPA and often at lower concentrations. Oh, and phthalates, another EDC found highly concentrated on the receipts that the cashier hands you wherever you spend your money. Think of the poor cashier!

So what is a person to do? Well, anything that we can do to reduce exposure is helpful. Use glass or steel water bottles, don’t heat in plastic or use plastic containers for long-term food storage. Use an excellent water filter like Clearly Filtered, that removes up to 99% of most of these and other chemicals. Tell the cashier to keep the receipt. Eat only organically grown and prepared food. Don’t give the baby a rubberized and plastic pacifier or use a similar baby bottle for feeding.

There is no doubt about it, we live in a contaminated world. We HAVE to get back to nature and do things in better ways. If we want to be able to even have and enjoy grandchildren, or children for many of you, we have to act now! If your doctor doesn’t mention the importance of EDCs when you ask about causes of your fatigue, brain fog, infertility, cancer, etc. then bring it up. Help him/her become educated. They have so much to keep up with that it might not be on his/her radar. Good luck! And replace that water bottle today!

PFAS "Forever Chemicals" Contamination Worse than Previously Thought
U.S. Tap Water Found To Have Widespread Contamination of "Forever Chemicals"
An alarming study published today by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) revealed that the contamination of PFAS (also known as the "forever chemicals") is likely detectable in all major water supplies in the US.1

43 out of 44 samples taken from across 31 states tested positive for PFAS contamination. 41 of those locations were shown to have PFAS detected at levels at which independent studies have shown PFAS to pose a serious health risk. And in all of those cases where the tests found PFAS, contamination had not been publicly reported by the EPA or state environmental agencies.

“It’s nearly impossible to avoid contaminated drinking water from these chemicals,” said David Andrews, a senior scientist at EWG

It was previously estimated that 110 million Americans could have PFAS in their drinking water. However, the results of this latest study would suggest that the actual number is sadly much higher. Some of the highest PFAS contamination was observed in major metropolitan areas such as New York, Miami, New Orleans, Ann Arbor, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia.

What are PFAS?
PFAS is actually a term that represents a family of chemicals rather than one individual thing. The name PFAS is an acronym for both per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances. PFAS may also be referred to more specifically by one of the individual chemicals such as PFOA or PFOS. These all represent the same category of contamination.

These chemicals were widely used because of their heat resistant and non-stick properties. Which is why you might also know them by their more commercial name: Teflon.

What are PFAS? What items contain PFAS?

Why are they called "Forever Chemicals?"
PFAS are known as this because once consumed, they build up in human tissues and organs and do not break down. They have not been shown to be biodegradable and thus, once they are released into the environment, they do not break down.

What will PFAS do to you?
The effects are largely still being studied, so the total cumulative effect over a lifetime is unknown. However, according to the EPA we do know that ingestion of PFAS can cause cancer, affect infant birth weight, accelerate puberty, cause liver damage, negatively affect the immune system and disrupt normal thyroid hormone function2

What is the legal limit for PFAS?
Sadly, PFAS are currently an un-regulated contaminant. This means that there is NO LEGAL LIMIT on how much PFAS can be in your tap water. The EPA has only set a "Health Advisory" for the chemicals and has no enforceable limit to how much PFAS can be in your tap water legally.2 This also means that municipalities are not enforced to actually test for the contaminant in the drinking water. As of today, the EPA only regulates 96 contaminants commonly found in drinking water, and that list has not been updated for years.

The EPA has only set a "Health Advisory" for the chemicals and has no enforceable limit to how much PFAS can be in your tap water legally.

How much PFAS is safe to drink?
Essentially zero. The measurement for PFAS is in such tiny increments that it is measured in parts per Trillion. For reference, there are one million millions in one trillion. So the actual amount of PFAS of PFAS that is safe to drink is zero. The EPA has set a preliminary Health Advisory at 70ppt (parts per trillion). However, most scientists believe that the toxic dose of PFAS is actually as low as 1ppt.

Will PFAS / PFOA Show Up On My TDS Meter?
No, the concentrations in which PFAS are shown to be toxic are at levels 0.000001 Parts per Million. To accurately measure this you need specialized equipment that can measure in Parts per Trillion. Relying on a consumer-grade TDS meter is not advisable. Properly calibrated laboratory equipment is required.

Do I have PFAS in my body?
Studies conducted by the Centers for Disease Control have shown that nearly all Americans tested positive for PFAS in their bloodstream. "In the U.S. alone, over 95% of adolescents and adults have measurable serum levels of PFOA, PFOA4"

In the U.S. alone, over 95% of adolescents and adults have measurable serum levels of PFOA, PFOA

Who does PFAS affect the most?
Some state health agencies such as the State of Michigan have advised that pregnant women, nursing mothers, infants and the elderly or those with chronic health conditions could be especially susceptible to PFAS and should avoid drinking the tap water.

Does my water filter remove PFAS?
PFAS contamination is a relatively new discovery, which means that none of the typical filters sold in retail stores have been tested/certified for removing PFAS. Simply carbon filters (like Brita, Pur) do not have PFAS testing. Even more advanced filters such as those made by ZeroWater are not capable of PFAS removal. Some reverse osmosis systems may reduce PFAS, but this varies greatly between units and most systems have not yet been tested for this. The filtration technology to remove PFAS does exist, and we're proud to recommend our Clearly Filtered Affinity Technology removes up to 99.9% of PFAS contaminants.

Can filters remove PFAS?

Which filters remove PFAS?
Clearly Filtered Water Pitcher

Clearly Filtered Under Sink Filter System

Clearly Filtered Inline Refrigerator Filter

We currently have testing for PFAS removal on our top 3 selling products: our filtered water pitcher, under sink system and inline fridge filter. It is likely that our other filters featuring the same Affinity Filtration Technology (such as our water bottles) do in fact remove PFAS but testing for those is not yet completed.

Microbiome

The marvelous, incredible, influential, modulating microbiome. There is nothing that does not impact or is impacted by this collection of organisms that resides within and on each of us. Everything that we think, hear, see, breath, smell, touch, taste, eat, or swallow has an affect for good or bad on our microbiome. We are constantly building or shrinking the diversity of this micro world that influences and is influenced by us. We can shape it by directing our thoughts, actions, words, and deeds toward gratitude and service or selfishness and greed. Literally everything in life has an affect for good or bad and comes back around to bless or curse us through the resultant chemical and energetic signaling that they create. Their DNA out number ours by 100:1. The gut microbiome, weighing about 3 lbs., the same as our brain, communicates with all other microbiome systems in our body and with every other microbiome around us and influences our feelings, thoughts, emotions, and actions as it is influenced by the same. It is a two-way informational exchange and if handled correctly can be a great blessing in our life if we choose wisely, and if not, a great curse. This, according to our choices.

More coming on how to maximize the benefits of a healthy Microbiome.

Gluten Harm! FAD OR FICTION?

Dear patients, friends, colleagues, and interested parties,

The question of gluten toxicity or inflammation is one that I have wrestled with professionally, personally and religiously. Here is the latest for those of you who are still wondering if this is just a “fad” thing or is it real?!

One of the most toxic food compounds destroying the gut is gluten.

With the significant advances in diagnosing wheat-related disorders, our understanding of the immune reactions to the proteins found in wheat, rye, and barley has been rapidly growing.

In a 2017 study published in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA), researchers reported that gliadin (protein component of gluten) can cause an immediate and transient increase in gut permeability. This process takes place in ALL individuals who ingest gluten - not just the people with diagnosed celiac disease. (The question we must continue to study and understand is the significance of this GI immune response. I believe that the more compromised the gut and immune state of the individual the more important this phenomena!)

In fact, a 2015 Nutrients article concluded that there was a marked increase in intestinal permeability after gliadin exposure that occurred in ALL individuals.

Furthermore, a study published in 2006 in the Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology reported that gliadin activates zonulin signaling (a hormone that creates leaky gut or relaxed tight junctions between the cells of the gut), which results in an immediate reduction of intestinal barrier function. (An important clarification. This appears to be independent of the source of gliadin. That is, American wheat, European wheat, spelt, Kamut. Emmer, Einkorn etc. I think more studies are necessary to clarify any differences but when combined with GLYPHOSATE (Roundup), which is sprayed on most wheat crops in the US, Argentina, Brazil, and others, the harm to the gut and its Microbiome is magnified significantly!)

All of this can be solved with a gluten-free diet, right? Not exactly!

Earlier this year, a study in the Journal of Gastroenterology showed that there are measurable amounts of gluten present in many gluten-free foods. The study looked at over 5,000 gluten-free (GF) foods and found that gluten was present in 32% of GF-labeled foods. Interestingly, gluten-free pizzas and pastas were the most common culprits with over 50% of these foods containing measurable amounts of gluten.

So it appears that gluten-free foods aren't exactly safe from gluten contamination, but even if you were able to completely avoid gluten, a gluten-free diet cannot repair intestinal damage. In fact, statistics show that mortality increases in the first year after starting a gluten-free diet. In 2016, JAMA published a study indicating that cardiovascular disease was the most common cause of death in celiac disease patients, followed by cancer. (This is mostly because the insoluble fibers important for Microbiome health coming from the wheat are typically not replaced by those who decide to go gluten free or adopt a paleo diet. Replacing these fibers with other plant based foods such as root vegetables, gluten free grains, other vegetables or legumes, can help reduce this danger.)

Gluten has become a serious threat to our well-being and longevity. Studies show that a gluten-free diet is not enough to repair intestinal damage from inflammatory foods and other lifestyle factors. This means that even if you do your best to diligently avoid gluten, you could still be subjected to gluten contamination if you consume packaged gluten-free foods. Thankfully, we’re not all doomed!

Stay tuned to learn more about our latest solution created in collaboration with Dr. Tom O’Bryan and Microbiome Labs. Coming soon! I am currently using the product, Wheat Protect, and will give you an updated report soon.
