📚 If you’re looking for one thing to do more of with your little ones next year, READ to them!

📚 Reading to babies from a very young age significantly contributes to their language development, cognitive skills, and overall brain development!

📚 Tips: read with enthusiasm & follow your child’s interests even if it means reading their favorite books over & over! Also check out your local public libraries for more books & story-time activities.

“Neurodiversity” is a term used to describe differences in the ways people’s brains work. The idea is that there’s no “correct” way. Instead, there is a wide range of ways that people think, learn and process information, and these differences should be embraced and encouraged.

Repost from the amazing ! “Having routines can be beneficial for many reasons, and one of those reasons is it helps kids who are learning to communicate!

It can be hard for parents to know how to use these for communication, and I teamed up to give you some tips- as well as a more broad and specific routine sequence!”

This historic increase in funding comes after months of advocacy where autistic individuals, their families, and many others across the disability community and country made their voices heard in support of this significant increase. Autism Speaks advocates’ collective action resulted in congressional offices receiving 14,000 letters supporting additional funding.

At a minimum, each child’s IEP team must include:
• Parent or guardian
• Special ed teacher
• General ed teacher
• School’s LEA
• Expert who can interpret evaluation results
• the Child
• Translator (if needed)

The parent or guardian is also permitted to bring an advocate to the IEP meeting.

Anyone else who works with the child and/or who has pertinent information on the child should also be invited to attend the meeting.

For more information on IEP Teams, check out The Intentional IEP blog, or go here >> https://www.theintentionaliep.com/who-is-iep-team/

No better way to start the week than with an amazing testimonial from an client’s parent! We love to hear feedback like this & we love our therapists who care so much about their clients! 🎉🎉🎉

Last year a family came to me because their child couldn’t say the /l/ sound. They had been working with another SLP on non-speech oral-motor exercises for tongue elevation for months and months and the child still could not produce /l/ AT ALL. 😧

So during our first session, I implemented minimal pairs and used multi-sensory cues to elicit /l/ in 5 words within the first 10 minutes of therapy. 🎉 But how sad that months were wasted working on the wrong thing!

So when the issue is obviously phonological, as in this case, we need to use multi-sensory cues to try and elicit the sound in tandem with appropriate phonological approaches!

Want to know more about how to use cues? Rebecca from Adventures in Speech Pathology recorded a fantastic low-cost course from brIQht ideas called “I Have a Cue for That! Learn the 11 Cues You Need for Your Speech Sound Caseload”. {link: https://www.bethebrightest.com/speech-sound-disorders-series/}

(Not an ad… I make no💰 from the sale of anyone else’s courses)

Anxiety is ever-present for autistic people. It can look many different ways, and often it looks like a behavioral issue or avoidance. If you see these behaviors, please consider potential anxiety. Of you just manage the behavior, the anxiety will be ignored and will continue to be a factor. Anxiety can be addressed by changing the environment, psychotherapy, and/or medications if needed.
