Aftercare Matters Too

We often prepare ourselves before a medical appointment, packing bags, gathering records, writing questions. But what about what happens after?

Appointments can be emotionally and physically draining for both parents and kids. That’s why aftercare is just as important as preparation. 💛

Here are a few simple ways to practice aftercare:
✨ Plan a quiet moment together, maybe a favorite snack, a drive with music, or a cuddle on the couch.
✨ Give space for emotions, tears, relief, or even silence are all okay.
✨ Write down what you learned before the details fade.
✨ Do something that signals “we are more than medical”: a family walk, board game, or reading a story.

Taking care of your heart after appointments isn’t a luxury, it’s part of the healing process.

What’s one small thing you do for yourself or your child after appointments?

Why Do I Feel Anxious on the Way to Appointments?

Have you ever noticed your heart racing, your stomach tightening, or your hands shaking, even before you arrive at a doctor’s office?

That’s not “just in your head.” Your body remembers trauma. Every hospital stay, rushed ER trip, or difficult appointment leaves an imprint. When you head to another visit, your nervous system may react as if it’s happening all over again.

This is called somatic memory-your body’s way of holding onto past stress.

The good news? You can support your body when this happens:
✨ Take slow, grounding breaths on the drive.
✨ Keep a calming object with you (a stone, bracelet, or photo).
✨ Remind yourself: This is a new appointment. I am safe in this moment.
✨ Plan a small comfort ritual for after the visit (coffee, walk, music).

You are not “overreacting.” Your body is simply remembering. And with practice, you can help it find safety again.

💛 Family Connection Therapy 💛

When a child is medically complex, the whole family feels the impact. Stress, hospital stays, and constant appointments can pull families in many directions, and sometimes, connection gets lost in the chaos.

Family Connection Therapy creates a safe space to:
✨ Strengthen bonds between parents, siblings, and children
✨ Improve communication when emotions feel overwhelming
✨ Build rituals of connection, even in the middle of medical demands
✨ Remind each member that their voice matters

You don’t have to navigate this alone. Therapy can help families rediscover each other, find joy in small moments, and create a foundation of support that makes the hard days a little easier.

What’s one simple way you connect with your family right now? (Bedtime talks, shared meals, a quick hug in the hallway—every small moment matters!)

📂 Tips for Managing Your Medical Binder Like a Pro 📂
Keeping track of your child’s medical info can feel overwhelming, but a well-organized medical binder can be a game-changer! Here are some easy tips to get started and stay on top of things:
✅ Create Clear Sections: Appointments, test results, medications, emergency plans, insurance info, school/IEP documents, therapy notes — use dividers to separate them.
✅ Use Printables: Daily care logs and medication trackers help keep info consistent and easy to find.
✅ Keep it Updated: After every appointment, add notes and new documents right away.
✅ Make Copies: Keep digital backups or photocopies in case your binder gets lost.
✅ Personalize It: Add a cover page with emergency contacts and your child’s key medical info for quick access.
A little organization can save you time, reduce stress, and help your medical team provide the best care. You’ve got this! 💪

A mother’s intuition is worth more than a medical degree.

-Dr. Susan Markle

In the beginning, I thought my voice did not matter in the care of my son in the NICU. However, I had nurses that empowered me. They taught me to use my voice, to advocate, and to educate myself. From then on, I have been a strong advocate and found issues that others have missed.

Never feel less than because you do not have a medical license certification behind your name. You are your child's best advocate!

I would love to help you on your advocacy journey!

Let’s bust 3 common myths that parents of medically complex kids hear all the time…

"You must be superhuman to handle this."

Reality: Caring for a medically complex child is exhausting and emotionally taxing. It’s okay and important to ask for help and practice self-care. You’re human, not a superhero.

"Your child just needs more discipline or willpower."

Reality: Medically complex children often have neurological, physical, or developmental issues beyond anyone’s control. Compassion and tailored support are what really help.

"You can’t live a ‘normal’ life with a medically complex child."

Reality: While life is definitely more complicated, families find ways to create meaningful, joyful moments, adapt, and thrive despite challenges.

When asked my speciality, I say medically complex families. It isn’t a common specialty in our field. Here is my why…

I see you. I understand the sleepless nights, the hospital stays, and the love that drives it all.
