The Hough Center for Adolescent Health The Hough Center for Adolescent Health features specialty medical and counseling care for adolescents facing a variety of Eating Disorder issues.

The adolescent medicine department of Beaumont Children's Hospital provides specialty care on a referral basis from pediatricians, family physicians or in response to parent requests. Specially trained physicians evaluate preteens to young adults up to age 20 to address the physical, emotional and social changes that occur during the adolescent years. Patients are given the opportunity to meet wit

h their provider alone for part of the visit and parent(s) are consulted to participate as partners to facilitate health-focused behaviors when appropriate. A strong family relationship provides a foundation for adolescents to build upon as they assume increasing responsibility for decisions. The Hough Center for Adolescent Health features specialty care for adolescents facing a variety of concerns. Our eating disorder program addresses medical management related to known or suspected eating disorders including, but not limited to:
- anorexia nervosa
- bulimia nervosa
- binge eating disorder
- preoccupation with weight or healthy eating that interferes with growth and development. The clinicians at the Hough Center provide medical evaluation and ongoing treatment through a generous grant from the Hough family. Patients are also connected with dietitians who specialize in eating disorders and are referred to community therapists.

THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE OF THE FUTURE YOU- It's okay if you aren't entirely convinced that this is true (or that it'll be really, really true in a couple of years from now). Give it time. You'll look back on these chapters of heartache, confusion, difficulty and struggle and be proud that you chose yourself and your recovery when every physical and emotional symptom you experienced in early recovery encouraged you to stay stuck. 🦋

We get it, you don't know what's behind the door of recovery. A new body, a new relationship with food, a new outlook and maybe a new you that isn't the you that you thought you wanted...but the beautiful thing? Recovered you doesn't care. Recovered you is proud of their decision to choose themselves. We are too.

For many of our patients, weight gain is a necessary part of recovery..and for almost all of our patients, that is a really challenging pill to swallow.

-No, you shouldn't weigh what you weighed at age 13 if you're 17 now
-No, you should not weigh what you weighed especially if it was acquired through restriction, compulsive movement, and unsustainable means
-No, we do not get to pick the bodies we live in or get to program them so we can look a certain way

During adolescence, you WILL gain weight- that's puberty (upwards of 60 lbs) ✨️ because it's necessary for bone, muscle, organ growth and whether you've found yourself comfortable with it or not, the acquisition of fat stores that our bodies so desperately need to have. Puberty is in no way shape or form a time for weight loss, and in the context of it, you're not allowing yourself to develop into the wonderful, bright, talented human being you were created to be.

So when you're struggling with gaining weight, remember your body didn't necessarily want to lose it. Your mind did- programmed to adapt to social and cultural ideals and the egosyntonic, excessively disciplined, restrictive nature of your disorder.

Whenever I excitedly tell patients "you've made great progress,"💓 they assume I mean they gained weight (which like, also an accomplishment for many). But what if you knew your progress meant you'd socialized more with friends? That you'd been able to celebrate Thanksgiving dinner and sit across from family while you ate? That you rested when every part of you wanted to exercise? That you shopped for new clothes and made peace with what you should no longer fit into? Oftentimes people get caught up and assume that at Hough we define your success by weight and metrics alone..but it's more than that- one day you'll look back and see that too ✨️
