MISSION
Arc of Onondaga supports people with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities in leading meaningful lives within their community. Arc of Onondaga is one of 35 local Chapters of The Arc New York, the largest provider of supports and services for people intellectual and developmental disabilities in New York state. In addition to the programs Arc of Onondaga offers in Onondaga Cou

nty, Chapters of The Arc New York collectively support more than 60,000 people with disabilities and their families in every county of the state and employ more than 30,000 people in our shared mission to provide people with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities the ordinary and extraordinary opportunities of life. As part of this larger statewide organization, Arc of Onondaga draws upon a rich network of expertise and statewide resources to ensure the highest quality services for the people we serve, and to raise the unified voices our Chapter communities and nearly 100,000 members statewide to strengthen our advocacy efforts. Founded by families more than 75 years ago, The Arc New York has driven transformation and progress in the lives of people with disabilities, fought and ended the abuses of institutionalization, and developed a robust system of community support that provides opportunity, dignity, and integration for people with disabilities. Together with [Chapter] and other Chapters across the state, The Arc New York continues to be an influential advocate for our system of care, and the rights and opportunities of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Our self-advocacy group, the Arc Achievers, attended the Accessibility Committee meeting at Syracuse Hancock International Airport this morning! They shared their perspectives and discussed potential travel issues, ADA compliance, how people can advocate for themselves, and helping others to understand what it's like for people with disabilities in situations such as airplane travel. Programs like Wings for All help those uncomfortable with flying and everything going to the airport entails. The Arc Achievers do such a great job getting out in the community and contributing to conversations like they did today. Thank you to all who attended and listened to what they had to say and thank you to the crew at Hancock International!

It's Membership Monday! Are you a member of our chapter yet?

Currently we are appealing to Congress to protect disability services and to fund our future! If Congress adopts the President’s proposal, it will eliminate funding for key programs under the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act (DD Act). This includes programs that support access to inclusive education, employment, community living, and more.

The proposal also includes policies that would weaken the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) by combining multiple funding streams into a “block grant.”

This change could lead to:
🔸Cuts to preschool programs for young children with disabilities.
🔸Less federal support for special education teachers, counselors, therapists, and paraprofessionals.
🔸Fewer training opportunities for school staff to meet the needs of students with disabilities.

We can’t let this happen. Congress must uphold its commitment to people with disabilities. Please take action today by visiting
https://action.thearc.org/ and telling your representatives WE MATTER!!!

Bridget, who works at our Hampton Day Hab, recently saw this quote at a conference she was attending and found it truly inspiring, so she had this made for the wall at Hampton to share with the entire team! We love this, Bridget! I'm sure our fellow chapters of The Arc New York will appreciate this as well!
