Highlighting LGBTQ+ Leaders in Civil Rights and Human Services

This Pride Month, SYFS is highlighting individuals who have played key roles in shaping U.S. history through their contributions to civil rights, health equity, and social policy. Each spotlight reflects the lasting impact of their work on communities and systems across the country.

Today, we highlight Marsha P. Johnson (1945–1992), a fearless activist, performer, and advocate whose contributions remain foundational to the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Johnson, a Black transgender woman, was a visible, outspoken figure in New York City’s q***r community and a key participant in the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history.

In the years that followed, she co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) with Sylvia Rivera — one of the first organizations in the country to provide shelter, advocacy, and resources to homeless transgender youth, s*x workers, and LGBTQ+ people of color. Beyond LGBTQ+ rights, Johnson spoke out on issues of racial justice, poverty, and public health.

Her advocacy helped create space for the most vulnerable members of her community and continues to influence social services and grassroots organizing today, reminding us of the enduring power of visibility, mutual aid, and community care.

Today, we highlight Pat Norman (1939–2022), a trailblazing public health advocate and community organizer whose work helped establish foundational health and social services for LGBTQ+ individuals and people living with HIV/AIDS. Norman was the first openly le***an employee of the San Francisco Health Department and one of the first out public officials in the country.

During the 1970s and 1980s, she developed culturally competent mental health and crisis services specifically for LGBTQ+ communities, and she played a central role in shaping the city’s early response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Norman also co-founded organizations supporting le***an mothers, survivors of violence, and LGBTQ+ individuals navigating the healthcare and justice systems.

Her advocacy helped integrate LGBTQ+ perspectives into public health and social work, creating long-term pathways for equity and inclusion in municipal care systems. Today, we highlight Pat Norman’s pioneering role in advancing access, safety, and representation in public health and human services.

Highlighting LGBTQ+ Leaders in Civil Rights and Human Services

This Pride Month, SYFS is highlighting individuals who have played key roles in shaping U.S. history through their contributions to LGBTQ+ civil rights, health equity, and social policy. Each spotlight reflects the lasting impact of their work on communities and systems across the country

Today we highlight Jim Toy, a pioneering advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and one of the first people in the U.S. to publicly come out as gay. For over five decades, Toy advanced equity in education, health, and civil rights—particularly for LGBTQ+ communities in Michigan and beyond.

In 1971, Toy co-founded the Human Sexuality Office at the University of Michigan, the first campus-based LGBTQ+ support center in the country. He helped establish essential support systems for LGBTQ+ students and led efforts to include inclusive language and protections in university and municipal policies.

Toy also contributed to local ordinances protecting LGBTQ+ residents from discrimination in housing, employment, and public spaces. A vocal proponent of intersectional justice, he emphasized the need to address race, class, and gender identity in broader human rights work.

His decades of advocacy helped build lasting institutional change and community support systems. We highlight Jim Toy’s impact on civil rights and his leadership in creating more inclusive systems of care and representation.

This Pride Month, SYFS is highlighting individuals who have played key roles in shaping U.S. history through their contributions to LGBTQ+ civil rights, health equity, and social policy. Each spotlight reflects the lasting impact of their work on communities and systems across the country.

Today, we highlight Mary Bonauto, a nationally recognized attorney whose legal advocacy has helped define constitutional protections for LGBTQ+ individuals and families. With decades of experience in public interest law, Bonauto’s work has focused on ensuring equal treatment under the law.

As the lead attorney in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health (2003), she was instrumental in making Massachusetts the first state to grant marriage licenses to same-s*x couples. She later argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), a decision that extended marriage rights nationwide. Through her role at GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), Bonauto has also worked to expand access to housing, healthcare, and employment opportunities.

Her legal efforts have contributed to lasting changes in how the law recognizes and supports diverse families and individuals. Today, we highlight her role in shaping legal history and her long-standing commitment to equal rights under the Constitution.
