Dorothy Schafer, PhD, and Travis Thomson, PhD, have received a $50,000 award from the Dan and Diane Riccio Fund for Neuroscience to study how the brain and organs, notably the liver, use extracellular vesicles to communicate.

“The Riccios have been extremely generous over the years, and their generosity has really helped trainees, helped P*s get an exciting new project off the ground, and helped collaborations get started. Their generosity, and what they're doing for science, is huge,” Dr. Schafer said. https://www.umassmed.edu/news/news-archives/2025/07/dorothy-schafer-travis-thomson-receive-riccio-fund-neuroscience-award/

Medical students spend years immersed in rigorous academic training and clinical preparation, mastering the complexities of medicine and patient care. But one essential skill is often overlooked in the curriculum: leadership.

On March 28, second-year students in the T.H. Chan School of Medicine at UMass Chan Medical School packed the multipurpose room in the Albert Sherman Center and got a crash course in leadership from Gerard R. (Gerry) Cox, MD’83, MHA, who led a distinguished medical career in government and military service.

His visit was part of the third annual Hudson Leadership Symposium. The symposium is made possible through the Hudson Leadership Development Fund, endowed by Doranne and Randall (Randy) Hudson, MD’78.

Melissa Harris and John Harris, MD, PhD'05, have endowed a scholarship at UMass Chan Medical School to bring more opportunity to aspiring physicians.

Established in both of their names, it honors the couple’s shared life, a joint dedication to John’s prolific career as a dermatologist and physician-scientist, and their belief that a student’s financial situation should never prevent them from pursuing a medical degree.
