Calories are not equal. There is no equality when it comes to calories. The old saying, "a calorie is a calorie is a calorie" is not quite true. Yes, a gram of carbohydrate is 4 calories. A gram of protein is 4 calories. Our body breaks these macronutrients down in completely different ways to create useable fuel. A simple sugar goes quickly into the bloodstream and to our cells for immediate use as fuel. A carbohydrate is a chain of sugars that requires a single reaction to turn it into a sugar for immediate use. A protein is a chain of amino acids that needs to have each amino acid cleaved off, converted, and process into either a keto acid or a sugar. These reactions require time and energy to perform. That's why proteins don't raise our blood sugar substantially. When we eat fat we must break it down into triglycerides and then into free fatty acids and then convert them into ketone bodies for use as fuel. Again, a more lengthy and energy using process. This is why a balanced diet with about a third of the calories from Carbohydrates, Proteins, and healthy Fats is important.

Can we raise our metabolism? Many of my patients say they have a slow metabolism. Our metabolic rate is dependent on many factors including our genetic makeup. There are things that slow our speed of function and some things that can increase it. Inactivity and poor sleep effect our metabolic rate. Low thyroid and some other hormone imbalances such as estrogen and testosterone can reduce our metabolic rate. Depression and many medications can reduce our metabolic functions. To increase our metabolism the best thing is activity. The absolute best thing is HIIT. High Intensity Interval Training. That takes a while to be able to perform it as it is high intensity exercise and some people will not be able to do it. General exercise early in the day can adjust our body's ability to function and process. Caffeine as many people have already discovered can increase metabolic rate for a period of time. Getting enough quality sleep and eating a healthy diet will allow our body to function at a higher capacity. Small adjustments in metabolism over time can lead to huge results in well being, weight reduction, energy, and overall health and function. Start with some movement.

How does protein become our fuel? Science Day. Every protein is made up of a varying sequence of amino acids. These amino acids are separated and used to repair tissues or turned into fuel. Some are converted to keto acids which ultimately can be "burned" (oxidized) as fuel in the mitochondria of our cells and some are converted to glucose through a process called gluconeogenesis to be used for fuel (oxidized) in our mitochondrial. In the mitochondria these fuels are converted end up producing ATP (Adenosine TriPhosphate). This molecule can be used to supply energy to our cells and thus our body. I know, this is a lot of info, but in reality the process involves many, many, chemical reactions and conversion. Our body is a complex machine with billions if not trillions of little reactions occurring in a coordinated symphony every second of our lives. Supplying our body with good healthy food composed the a balance of nutrients allows the machinery to run efficiently and endlessly (Until death). Let me know if you prefer less science and more general info. Thanks.

Can I eat fruit when I'm attempting to lose weight? Yes, but there are a few caveats. Fruit is healthy for us. Fruit provides vitamins, nutrients, water, and fiber. Fruit however is mostly water and sugar. If we eat too much fruit we will gain weight and body fat. Our ancestors would only have fruit for a short time each year due to lack of ability to store it. At harvest they would consume large amounts of fruits and put on some weight for winter, when they were not available. Too much of a good thing is not a good thing, so when a patient says they eat "tons" of fruit, I recommend they cut back to reasonable amounts. Berries are a good way to eat fruit when working on weight reduction. They are the most healthy and some of the lowest calorie fruits. A simple guage on the amount of sugar in fruit is, if you can eat the peeling the fruit is lower in sugar content. If you cannot eat the peeling it is higher in sugar content. Citrus fruits are exempt from this generalization. Think bananas, pineapple, and melons as higher sugar fruit. We don't eat the peel. Think berries, apples, pears as low sugar fruits as we do eat the peel. Enjoy some fruit on your diet, but don't overdo.

Working to lose weight? When things aren't going in the right direction for you or you are feeling frustrated you can enter the zone of discontent. It's a feeling that drags you down. You are going about your usual life and activities, but in your mind there is a cloud hovering over your weight and overall health. You want to drop the excess body weight and excess fat, yet, it seems like whatever you do isn't working. You lose some weight and it comes back. You've tried all kinds of things and nothing works long term. You used the GLP-1 meds and when you stopped them, the weight returned. What's wrong. This discontent is a negativity that can actually work to produce negative results. How do we break through this? We take positive action. When we consistently take positive action we get positive results. These small positive results lead to positive energy which allows us to continue the right actions. The cycle will continue and grow and lift you from the negative cloud. You can do this.

Obstacles are those big hairy things we face on our way to our goals. Obstacles can be other people, jobs, finances, and many are self-perceived like age, height, weight, financial status, etc. To reach our body goals we must recognize obstacles and figure out how to move around them, through them, over or under them. I like to think that obstacles are put in my way to test if I'm really serious about reaching my goals. If I'm not serious then the obstacle usually wins. If I'm serious then I figure out how to beat the obstacle. You've set goals for body weight, body percent fat, inches around your waist, fitness, and improved health. Have you decided to not let any obstacles deter you from the goal? Your life is important. Your energy and vitality are needed. There is no obstacle you can't get beyond, seriously.

We all tend to get into patterns in our daily life. Let's say we're initiating a plan to drop excess weight and get healthier. We have an eating plan, an exercise plan, maybe some Dr. visits, and some psychologic lessons to do. Then, life happens. An illness in the family, a job demand, a financial surprise, or an unexpected visit from a friend or family member happens. We must then be flexible with our schedule even though we had worked to get control of it for weight loss purposes. Learning to incorporate the weight loss plan along side the unexpected can make all the difference in success or a failed attempt. The plan doesn't have to be worn on our sleeve or even shared with anybody. We can adjust to the new demand and continue to work on our own plan. Flexibility is key to success and to less stress. Have a plan B or even C in case something happens in your life that allows you to still work on your better health goals.

Mastery is a term not to be taken lightly. It's rare that we completely master a subject, a task, a way of being, or anything else. We often get very good at things, but mastery is a whole different level of achievement. Wouldn't it be great if we could master our health? Eat exceptionally well. Achieve our perfect weight. Be strong and fit and flexible. Have perfect check ups at the doctor's visit. Mastery may or may not be achievable, but it is something worth striving toward. With our health we need to establish certain patterns in our life that will lead to a healthier status. Our body is designed to heal and maintain itself if we put it in the right environment. The right environment is a balanced diet without excess calories. Low sugar, salt, and flour products along with consistent exercise and activity are needed. Getting adequate and good sleep and staying hydrated support our body. Avoiding excess stress and staying away from self-inflicted toxins are important. Mastery is a mindset followed by appropriate action. A truthful statement is that we become good at what we do on a regular basis. If we treat our health as a high priority and act in that manner daily, we will get good at our health. Mastery is just another higher climb in the same direction. Become a master of your health.

To reach the goal of getting to your healthiest state and best body weight it takes change and adaptation. The ability to change is paramount when it comes to accomplishing big goals. What got us to an unhealthy state must be changed or we will continue down the unhealthy path. But change is not easy. Change is stopping one thing and doing a different thing. Now, to get fit and healthy, we don't always have to change everything. Some things require adaptation. This is moving in a slightly different direction without making a drastic change. Modifying our eating and activity behavior is a form of adapting. These two directional shifts, change and adaptation require a different mindset. When we look at our behavior in a different light and with an open mind we can make decisions that allow for the change or adaptation to occur. Using our mind to solve the issues is a power that only us humans have plenty of. We often don't put that power to its full capacity. Decide what's not working for you now, think deeply about it, adapt to create new behaviors, and in some cases make some major changes. Without adapting or changing we are destined to continue down the same path. That's not for you.

Sometimes our emotions take us on a rollercoaster ride. Up and down hour to hour, day to day or even longer. When we are working to get the excess body fat down and get more fit, we can often get into this emotional ride. This is counterproductive to our mission and goal. We can't get emotional if we make a mistake. We should acknowledge the error and work to prevent it next time. We can't get elated when we lose two pounds if it lets our guard down. Learning to stay emotionally controlled is not easy. As humans we live in our emotions. We can learn to keep them in check and not let them control our efforts and progress. Certainly, we will have emotions during our work to improve our health, but we must not let them drive our next move or our path to success. It's good to be happy and ok to be disappointed. These are important experiences but not what ultimately move us toward our desired goal.

We can make decisions that affect us positively and some that can affect us negatively. Throughout the day we make thousands of decisions. Most, we don't even think about or consider. Get up or lay in bed a bit, eat breakfast or not, turn left or right, smile or not smile, and almost everything we do require a decision. Making positive decisions can dramatically improve our lives. It is a choice. I could make a negative decision that could literally ruin my life. One that's commonly made is to drink alcohol and drive. I can also make a positive decision that can greatly move my life in a great direction. Let's take saving money. We will all make negative decisions. With losing weight those decisions can be obvious. Donut or no donut? Take a walk or sit on the couch? Drink a water or a soda? The list is infinite. When we make series of positive decisions our weight goes down. Consistent positive decisions will change our lives over months and years. These positive decisions can be learned and can become a habit. Just like driving decisions. We don't really think about the mechanics of driving. To make more positive decisions, just think before acting and ask, "will this positively affect me or negatively affect me?". Then the choice is yours.

No one likes to be uncomfortable. We do about anything to avoid discomfort. There's a difference between pain and discomfort. I'm not talking about pain. The truth is that we must get used to having some discomfort in our lives. Growth usually occurs when we leave our comfort zone. When it comes to losing weight and getting healthier, we must endure some discomfort. There is some discomfort in cutting food intake and reducing certain tasty food selections. There is some discomfort in an exercise regimen. There is even some discomfort in switching from sugar drinks to water. We must befriend discomfort. Knowing that getting out of the comfort zone and into the discomfort zone for a time can bring amazing benefits and personal growth opportunities which can be exciting in themselves. A Navy Seal once told me that in order to become a Seal he had to learn to like discomfort and in fact he had to learn to be miserable. I'm not asking anyone to become miserable to get healthy. Just accept some discomfort and learn that it is the path toward improvement. The joy and comfort of a healthy and leaner body far outweighs any discomfort in getting there.
