Calories are not equal. There is no equality when it comes to calories. The old saying, "a calorie is a calorie is a calorie" is not quite true. Yes, a gram of carbohydrate is 4 calories. A gram of protein is 4 calories. Our body breaks these macronutrients down in completely different ways to create useable fuel. A simple sugar goes quickly into the bloodstream and to our cells for immediate use as fuel. A carbohydrate is a chain of sugars that requires a single reaction to turn it into a sugar for immediate use. A protein is a chain of amino acids that needs to have each amino acid cleaved off, converted, and process into either a keto acid or a sugar. These reactions require time and energy to perform. That's why proteins don't raise our blood sugar substantially. When we eat fat we must break it down into triglycerides and then into free fatty acids and then convert them into ketone bodies for use as fuel. Again, a more lengthy and energy using process. This is why a balanced diet with about a third of the calories from Carbohydrates, Proteins, and healthy Fats is important.
