🎗️ July is Fibroid Awareness Month

Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in or on the uterus. They’re common—especially among women of reproductive age—and can cause symptoms like heavy periods, pelvic pain, bloating, and frequent urination.

Many women live with fibroids without knowing there are treatment options available.

This month, we’re raising awareness to empower women with knowledge and encourage conversations about symptoms and care.

At HCA Florida Palms West Hospital, Dr. Ricardo Estape, Gynecologic Oncologist, works closely with women to diagnose and manage fibroids with compassionate, specialized care. Here, Dr. Estape speaks about abnormal bleeding which can be a cause of fibroids.

Let’s break the silence around fibroids and empower women with knowledge. You don’t have to live in discomfort.

Cecile Sims knew she needed to make a change. She had tried diets, weight loss injections and other options, but she continued to have trouble shedding her weight.
"I had [weight loss surgery] in mind. I knew I had to get in a healthy state of mind," she recalls.
Three weeks before she scheduled weight loss surgery, Dr. Alberto Zarak had removed her gall bladder, and Cecile says Dr. Zarak helped her decide it was the right time to commit to her health and weight loss.
Cecile became a patient of the HCA Florida Palms West Hospital Weight Management Center and Dr. Zarak performed her robotic-assisted gastric sleeve surgery the day before Thanksgiving 2024.
Now, eight months later, she's gone from a size 22 to a size 14 and she says her confidence has soared. "It's been a medical and metabolic reset," she says. "I feel like I have reclaimed my life and took control."

One in eight people, and one in six children, in North Florida live in households that may be food insecure, which means not having enough nutritious food to have an active, healthy life.

At HCA Florida Healthcare we care committed to to fighting food insecurity. Recently, HCA Florida Capital Hospital presented a $15,000 donation to Second Harvest of the Big Bend to help provide food to families experiencing hunger, bringing the total to $23,000 since 2023.

The financial support is part of a broader effort that has included more than 250 colleagues from HCA Florida Healthcare volunteering at the Second Harvest of the Big Bend over the past two years to help sort and pack food donations.

⚠️Summer fun comes with risks, but simple precautions can help prevent injuries.

💧 Falls
➡️ Prevention: Use slip-resistant mats near pools and decks, and supervise kids closely. Consider wearing non-slip, supportive shoes.

🚗 Motor vehicle crashes
➡️ Prevention: Buckle up, stay focused and ensure proper vehicle maintenance before long trips.

🚴 Bicycle and pedestrian injuries
➡️ Prevention: Always wear a helmet when biking, use reflective clothing and follow traffic rules.

☀️ Heat-related illness
➡️ Prevention: Stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade. Avoid strenuous activity during peak sun hours (between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.), and remember that children, older adults and people with chronic illnesses are especially vulnerable to heat-related illness.

🔥 Burn injuries
➡️ Prevention: Take special care around grills, fire pits, fireworks and lawn equipment. Never refuel gas-powered mower engines while they’re hot, and always keep children at a safe distance.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the arms or legs. It’s easy to mistake PAD for other conditions like hip arthritis or spinal stenosis, which means often goes undiagnosed. Many people with PAD don’t experience symptoms at all. That’s why awareness of risk factors – such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and smoking – is crucial for screening.

Understanding the early warning signs is the first step toward timely intervention and better quality of life. In most cases, lifestyle changes, exercise and medications are enough to slow the progression or even reverse the symptoms of PAD, so talk to your doctor if you think you may be at risk.

Small businesses play an important role as job creators and are a pillar in communities nationwide. More than 4 million small business owners purchase healthcare coverage on their own and rely on Enhanced Premium Tax Credits (EPTCs) to keep premiums affordable.

But unless Congress acts soon, these tax credits will expire at the end of 2025. Many small businesses may face increased costs or be forced to reduce or eliminate employee health coverage.
