The decline in testosterone levels population-wide in recent decades is alarming. As the most abundant hormone in the human body, testosterone plays a crucial role in energy, strength, metabolism, mood, and overall health.

One major contributor? Xenoestrogens. These hormone-disrupting chemicals are found in plastics, personal care products, processed foods, and everyday household items. They mimic estrogen in the body, which signals it to suppress natural testosterone production.

Over the past 50 years, xenoestrogens have become nearly impossible to avoid. According to the CDC, over 90% of Americans have detectable levels of xenoestrogens like BPA in their bodies.

At our practice, we take a different approach. Through bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), we help restore your hormone levels to where they should be based on your individual needs, not outdated lab ranges.

For women, hormonal balance doesn’t mean your levels remain the same from day to day. Hormonal fluctuations are a natural part of a healthy, regular menstrual cycle. During the first half, estrogen levels rise until they peak at ovulation. The second half of the cycle is then dominated by progesterone. These hormonal shifts can impact everything from mood and energy to metabolism.

Understanding these shifts and their potential impact on you is crucial to staying informed about your health. It's when imbalances and symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, or low motivation persist throughout every phase of the cycle that bioidentical hormone replacement therapy can come in. Don't ignore the red flags. With BHRT, we can help restore your hormone levels to their optimal levels.

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, capable of absorbing up to 60% of what you put on it. And with many makeup products containing endocrine disruptors, that means your daily beauty routine might be doing more than just improving your appearance; it could be hurting your hormones.

If you’re looking to make your makeup routine more hormone-friendly, start by checking your labels and avoiding these ingredients:

🚫 Parabens (including methylparaben and propylparaben) - mimic estrogen in the body, which can disrupt hormonal balance
🚫 Phthalates (frequently hidden under “fragrance”) - interfere with the endocrine system, affecting estrogen and testosterone levels
🚫 Synthetic fragrances and dyes - often contain undisclosed chemical blends that may trigger estrogen dominance/other imbalances
🚫 Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (e.g., DMDM hydantoin) - slowly release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen that also acts as an endocrine disruptor and irritates the immune system
🚫 Oxybenzone - may act like estrogen in the body after being absorbed, affecting thyroid function and reproductive hormones

Tiny swaps on products you use every day can have a big impact on your hormone health in the long term. Curious if your products are safe? Give our office a call to speak with a medical provider!

Did you know vitamin D is actually a hormone your body makes from sunlight, in addition to a vitamin?

Vitamin D is produced by our bodies in response to sunlight and plays a crucial role in maintaining calcium levels, strong bones, and healthy immune function. It also helps with mood regulation, reduces inflammation, supports muscle strength, and promotes cardiovascular health. Not only is Vitamin D essential for short-term wellness, but it is also for long-term health, as adequate vitamin D levels are linked to a lower risk of contracting autoimmune conditions, infections, and even certain cancers.

Yet, Vitamin D deficiency is the most common vitamin deficiency in the US. Around 70% of adults struggle with Vitamin D deficiency, often without even knowing it. The current deficiency is defined as blood levels below 20 ng/mL, a threshold originally established to prevent rickets, a childhood bone disease that causes soft and weakened bones.

Prioritizing sun exposure and nutrient-rich foods in our diet can help bring these levels to where they need to be. In some cases, supplementation can make a meaningful difference in bringing your Vitamin D levels to where they need to be.

Healthcare shouldn't operate on a one-size-fits-all approach. It's our goal to change healthcare and provide you with a compassionate treatment experience as individual as you are.

Tired of being told your symptoms are normal, even when you don't feel like yourself? Most lab reference ranges are based on population averages. These often reflect our less-than-healthy general population, rather than what is optimal for your well-being. For instance, each year the "normal" range of Testosterone decreases.

At Optimal Bio, we dig deeper. We listen closely, address all your questions and concerns, and treat based on how you feel, not just what the numbers say.

What’s the best type of exercise for hormone health? When it comes to supporting your hormones through movement, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, as it's personal to every individual. However, a few types of exercise consistently stand out for their benefits: including strength training, pilates, interval training, and walking.

Among so many benefits of working out, strength training several times a week builds lean muscle, supports metabolism, supports mood and focus, and overall health. Pilates adds core strength, flexibility, and balance while also regulating your nervous system. And interval training (which entails alternating short bursts of effort with short periods of rest) increases endurance and improves insulin sensitivity. Pair these with walking daily, which helps regulate cortisol, improves circulation, and gently supports your nervous system.

The key is consistency. The right mix of movement will leave you feeling energized, balanced, and strong.

Struggling to find balance? We're here to support you on your journey to optimal health every step of the way. Call our office or inquire online to set up a consultation with one of our medical providers.

Sun exposure is essential for hormone health, boosting vitamin D, mood, immune health, and even hormone balance! It may help with cancer prevention. But if you're burning fast this summer, it might not be the sun. Many commercial sunscreens and seed oils increase sensitivity to UV. Make sure you skip these hormone-disrupting sunscreen ingredients for a safer, healthier summer. ➡️
