We are a community-based, child-friendly center offering consolidated care for children and families affected by sexual abuse or severe physical abuse. We provide a coordinated, multi-disciplinary, comprehensive response to victims and their caregivers.

❤️ Today, we commemorate Juneteenth—a powerful reminder of freedom delayed, justice pursued, and the resilience of generations. We carry this spirit forward every day through our work with children impacted by abuse, neglect, and trauma.

💛 Many of the young lives we serve have experienced deep injustices. Our mission is to ensure their healing, amplify their voices, and help break the cycles that have held them back for too long.

💚 This Juneteenth, we recommit ourselves to building a world where every child, regardless of race, background, or circumstance, can grow up safe, loved, and free.

We hit the road (and the sand!) for the Children's Advocacy Centers of North Carolina Seaside Symposium in Myrtle Beach, and we didn’t just bring sunscreen, we brought our A-game!

The best part? Time to connect with our incredible team from across the state, soak up some sun ☀️, and grow stronger together for the kids we serve.

🌞 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐫.

As school lets out and routines shift, children may spend more time in new environments, such as camps, childcare, with extended family, or unsupervised online. These transitions, while often fun, can also increase risk factors for abuse.

🏖️ Know who your child is with: trust is earned, not assumed.
🏖️ Ensure open communication: encourage kids to tell you how they feel and what they experience.
🏖️ Encourage body safety: remind children that they are the boss of their bodies.
🏖️ Watch for behavior changes: sudden shifts in mood, sleep, or social behavior could be red flags.

This Memorial Day, we remember the brave men and women who gave their lives so that others could live in freedom and safety. Their sacrifice reminds us daily of the power of protection, courage, and service.

We are deeply grateful for the heroes who fought for our nation, and we are equally committed to standing as protectors for children in need, especially those in foster care and those served by our children’s advocacy center.

Throughout April, we’ve shared resources, offered education, and provided practical tips to help families, caregivers, and communities prevent child abuse and create safe, supportive environments for children.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲. At Southmountain, we remain a year-round resource for families and children in need, offering therapy, support, and safe spaces through our foster community and child advocacy centers.

North Carolina's Children's Advocacy Center Day was yesterday, April 28, 2025. While we may have missed the date, we never miss the mission.

1️⃣ CACs offer a place where healing begins, truth is heard, and every child’s well-being is the priority.
2️⃣ CACs ensure child victims of abuse are met with care, respect, and support every step of the way.
3️⃣ Through strong partnerships with law enforcement, child welfare, medical providers, and mental health professionals, we help provide safe, child-focused spaces for those affected by abuse.

𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 🫶

Discipline isn’t just about correcting behavior—it’s about building understanding.

Healthy communication during discipline means:

▪️ 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐦 instead of yelling
▪️ 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 what behavior needs to change—and why
▪️ 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 to their feelings without interrupting
▪️ 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 when possible, so they feel some control
▪️ 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 that mistakes never change how much they are loved

Clear, calm, respectful communication teaches kids that even when there’s a problem, it’s safe to talk, safe to feel, and safe to learn.

That kind of trust makes it much harder for abuse to take root and much easier for kids to ask for help when they need it.

One powerful way to prevent child abuse is to teach kids that their voice matters.

✅ Let them make choices
✅ Ask their opinion
✅ Include them in decisions

𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲. When kids feel heard, they’re more likely to speak up if something’s wrong and to trust the adults who respect them!
