I remember drawing stick figures as a little girl. Then around middle school, I began drawing more. Over the years I’d draw, even got into painting with acrylics on canvas. As part of Visual Arts-Graphic Design curriculum in college, I enrolled Drawing II class in the Spring of 2022 while the world dealt with the pandemic. This drawing rendered in graphite pencil and charcoal pencil on drawing paper, I rendered of a live n**e model in class challenged me. We were instructed not to just draw the model, but everything and everyone in the background. I had to stick with it and be patient in the process. It took me about 10 days to complete. This assignment was part of my portfolio. I look at it now, in awe that sometimes what’s the most difficult leads to triumph and lessons learned. What I learned about myself is that there’s more within me creatively than I realize. Challenges lead to growth.

Continuing to use art as my therapy, I’m exploring more subject matter. Both of these drawings were inspired by tutorials I found on YouTube. I enjoy automobiles, so I decided to draw one. The drawing on the left is that of a BMW. For the drawing on the right, which is entitled, “Kenyan Queen”, I was inspired to incorporate Kenya in the piece with an African beauty. Both drawings are rendered in graphite on paper.

Artwork isn’t just a gift for me, it’s my therapy. Yesterday, I began drawing and coloring this beautiful red rose with colored pencil. I so needed this. Seems like I’ve been “stuck” lately. Sometimes I must back away, breathe and get back to it. Art requires patience, lots and lots of patience.

“Ready For the Simple Life” is the title of this digital artwork piece I composed. The young lady’s image wasn’t one I created, I found it on pixabay.com. For me, composition is knowing how to place objects, elements and themes together to create a cohesive design. Lately, I’ve been thinking about expanding my skill set to include digital artwork and other media. Practice, practice, practice… no one improves without it!

This is a work in progress I began a few weeks ago from an acrylic painting tutorial by an artist named John Lisondra. It’s an acrylic on 20 x 30 canvas. Eagles are one of my favorite subjects to paint. They are such majestic animals. They depict strength, power, loyalty. Painting, drawing, being creative are teaching me better patience because the lesson isn’t taught in a sprint, it’s in the journey. It’s amazing how the beginning looks nothing like the finished product. Paintings are born looking like ugly ducklings, but “grow up” to be beautiful swans. This is similar to what one of my art professors once said.

I’m working on putting more personal touches and details in this painting. Stay tuned!

Freehand drawing with colored pencils. It began with his nose, then I went from there. He just came to mind. I don’t know who this person is. He may eventually have a mustache and beard. Let’s see! 😉

Since 2019, I’ve been working on this painting. Sometimes, I must go back to reimagine and rework an idea to convey a better concept. This is what I did. The 24 x 36 acrylic on canvas is tentatively entitled, “Heavenly Escort”.
