I have a lot of family pictures. I mean a LOT. In addition to my own, I've inherited photo albums from my grandparents, a great aunt and my mom. I've embarked on the (seemingly endless) journey of going through every photograph, weeding out the landscapes and vacation shots (my grandmother took endless pictures of flowers during their early 1970s trip to Hawaii), tossing out duplicates (selecting the one or two best shots from the 42 taken), putting them in chronological order, digitizing them and labeling/storing them. WHEW.
To make it more manageable, I've broken the task down into timeframes. This past weekend, my husband was off at the ranch with some friends, so I was left with an opportunity to dig in and make some progress. The result? I focused on the years 1966-1980, which encompassed my life from birth to right before high school. To my surprise, after some major weeding, I was left with less than 200 pictures. Still a lot, but SO many fewer than what I started with. And I can say that I really love each of the ones that remained.
What struck me in going through all these pictures was I had a whole story in my head for each one of them. Most of them I haven't shared with anyone, but that give insight to me and my family. So now I have an additional step I'm adding to my project... I'm going to jot down a quick explanation or story to go along with each. I'm still searching for how I'm going to attach that information to each picture. I'm using the .jpg file metadata fields, but I hope to find a way to create a digital photo album as well so my current and future family can read more about our family members.
In the spirit of sharing, I'm attaching some of my favorites and sharing the stories behind each where applicable.
Even if you don't do exactly this, remember to share the little stories with your families. I promise you they will cherish those little insights. 🩷
P.S. If you have a favorite family picture and would like to share YOUR story, comment below! I'd love to see them.
