U.S. Army Soldiers from the Fort Drum Medical Activity’s Medical Company (MEDCO) conducted hot and cold load training at Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield on July 24, 2025, sharpening their skills for rapid, real-world mission readiness.

“Cold load” refers to the process of loading patients onto a helicopter when the engines are off, while “hot load” involves loading patients with the engines running and the blades spinning. The hot load scenario is more challenging and potentially dangerous.

This specialized training, conducted in partnership with Charlie Company, 3-10 General Support Aviation Battalion, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, equips Soldiers with the skills necessary to efficiently and safely load and unload patients onto aircraft in potentially chaotic situations.

Who said training can't be fun?

Recently, Soldiers from MEDDAC’s Medical Company (MEDCO) used Fort Drum’s paintball field to conduct Army Warrior Training, or AWT, to reinforce basic squad tactics.

In partnership with Fort Drum’s Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (FMWR) Warrior Adventure Quest program, the event provided Soldiers an exciting training tool to enhance readiness. This program introduces Soldiers to safe, adrenaline-inducing activities, offering positive alternatives to common challenges faced both after deployments and in everyday life.
