There is a valuable tool called the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument that was developed by the University of Michigan to help self assess neuropathy. The Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI) is used to assess distal symmetrical peripheral neuropathy in diabetes. It includes two separate assessments: a 15-item self-administered questionnaire and a lower extremity examination that includes inspection and assessment of vibratory sensation and ankle reflexes. It is a helpful for people who suspect they have neuropathy to gather more information before seeing their doctor. What should you do when you feel eerie spiders going up and down your leg during the night?
You might have peripheral neuropathy. Basically what occurs is that the nerves in your legs or hands begin to lose the level of sensitivity. The toxicity of the chemotherapy consumes away tat the nerve covering triggering feelings of discomfort or loss of feelings. In the case of diabetics the cause is usually do to poor circulation and poor glucose regulation. For alcoholics, the alcohol is a sugar and it becomes a mainstay of the diet disrupting insulin sensitivity.
Because all of these conditions are major causes of peripheral neuropathy which is usually treated with medications like Lyrica or Cymbalta. Quite frequently a side result of the neuropathy medications is weight gain and brain fog.
The main symptoms of peripheral neuropathy are universal across the primary three types of peripheral neuropathy diabetes triggered neuropathy, chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy, and alcoholic neuropathy. The is a valuable tool called the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument that was established by the University of Michigan to assist self assess neuropathy. The Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI) is used to assess distal balanced peripheral neuropathy in diabetes but can be used to diagnose all three major types of neuropathy.
