I’ve got a truth bomb for ya today…
A few weeks ago I did a little experiment after deleting the Instagram app from my phone. The experiment was to see how I would do if I put the app back on my phone and began posting a little more consistently. The results? Not very good, actually!
What I discovered was that I would feel compelled to frantically check my phone several times a day to see who was viewing and liking my posts and if any post didn’t get much traction, it would make me feel bad about myself. I would also feel compelled to check daily how many followers I had and when I saw the number actually go DOWN instead of up, this made me feel like I must not be very likable.
While I logically knew that social media following doesn’t really mean anything, my lizard brain that is wired for connection was triggered into thinking that I was unsafe because I wasn’t “liked” by the community (human evolution is powerful!). And once I saw how powerful this response was, I decided that being “popular” on social media just wasn’t for me.
It also gave me very good insight into what it must be like to be a teenager on social media and how grateful I am that social media did not exist when I was a teenager. If likes and followers can make a 40-something adult feel bad, imagine what it can do to a developing brain. Yikes- no wonder there’s so much anxiety with the younger generation.
Soo… I’ve decided that I am just not going to worry about social media anymore. But what I AM focusing on instead is getting my message out in ways that actually feel good to me, the biggest one being podcasting. I have revamped my podcast (now ) and will be bringing weekly bite-sized FAQ style episodes giving you tools related to holistic healing to help you heal yourself, connect with spirit and transform your life.
