What an important and relevant message for us all!!!
I had two dear friends experience sudden deaths in their families this past weekend. One lost her 50-something year old brother. One lost her 80-something year old father. One had a will in place. One didn’t. Both of these families are in deep shock and grief. And both are overwhelmed with the enormous task of putting arrangements in place and beginning the process of ‘packing up’ the lives of those who left.
To some, I’m sure my consistent focus on preparing for death is annoying. Morbid. Over-the-top. To me, having lived through too many deaths to count and most being sudden, I feel like I would be dishonoring those who left if I didn’t attempt to spread the message to Be Prepared.
Being prepared is the MOST IMPORTANT GIFT YOU CAN GIVE THOSE YOU LOVE. It significantly reduces the burden and stress they experience when you die.
When you have a plan in place - like a healthcare power of attorney, a durable power of attorney, a will or trust, a list of people to contact, a list of your financial accounts, a list of your passwords, pre-paid arrangements for the disposing of your body, songs or ideas for a service (if you want one), a pre-written obituary, etc., your family can REST in knowing they’re doing everything you would want them to do. It provides a map for them to follow and allows them more space to grieve rather than get lost (because they already feel lost enough) in administrative details.
Please, please, please. Hear this message. There is no promise of tomorrow. I have a ‘When April Dies Checklist’ in place that I keep updated. Start working on your checklist today. If it seems overwhelming, do it in small chunks. You’ve got this and those who love you will thank you for leaving this as part of your legacy! 🙏
Peace to you!
April
