Social media in the fitness space has felt very “click baity” lately, so here’s a more honest and longer post.

I’ve always used it to share my personal development journey as a trainer and coach, and now that I’m in my 11th year, here’s my biggest takeaway from the last few years and where I’ve grown the most.

As a younger trainer, I would almost try to control my clients’ results. I’d over explain things, try to squeeze four hours of information and exercises into one hour, and constantly worry about whether what I was doing was working.

It all came from a good place. My own lack of experience, a desire to be a great trainer, drive, and a genuine care for my clients.

As I’ve gained more experience and worked with some great mentors ( and ), I’ve learned that showing up prepared, setting expectations, talking less, and simply having a professional presence has actually had a bigger impact on client results.

I don’t force feed information anymore, and as a byproduct, clients tend to ask more questions and take more ownership over their progress.

Of course, I still connect deeply with my clients. I’ve been training some of the same people for over 10 years. But now I have a much clearer system for how I program, assess, and run my business.

There’s less “stuff” floating around in my head and more simplicity in my approach. I’m able to put the necessary change on the client, rather than trying to control it myself.

All in all, it feels like true coaching. Funny how things come full circle when you have been doing it long enough.

What I’m most proud of isn’t the weight (though 60 lbs for 5 reps at her body weight is strong) it’s the control, the pause at the bottom, the full range of motion, and the quality of the squat itself 👏
