Hello my San Jose friends. Today I want to talk about something that hit home for me personally during this past week: Adrenal Fatigue.
I’ve heard it described as being bone tired where the fatigue penetrates to the core of your being. Or wired and tired where you’re exhausted, but there’s something inside that won’t let you relax because it feels like you’ve had 5 cups of coffee.
In addition to the motivation-draining fatigue, you can also experience brain fog, memory problems, and low back pain, to name a few symptoms. And the worst part is all these problems get worse when you add in a dose of stress.
Let’s face it, sometimes life throws us a curveball, and sometimes it throws us several curveballs all at once.
That’s what happened to me recently…
A bathroom in my clinic was being remodeled and while I did my best to maintain a peaceful, serene, zen-like environment for my patients, there was periodic banging, hammering, drilling and the high-pitched whirr of a power saw going on just down the hall.
Ugh. It felt like fingernails screeching on a chalkboard at times.
When the new flooring was installed, there was that horrible sweet chemical smell of epoxy that filled the buidling. A brief encounter wasn’t too bad, but being subjected to this for a couple of days made me dizzy and gave me a headache.
While these two sensory insults had an impact on me, I was still navigating the week pretty well, but then came the emotional hit. My 18-year-old son was moving away to another state and while I'm so proud of him for moving on to the next stage of his life, I'm also a single mom and it’s been just the 2 of us for a number of years, so I was heart-broken that he was leaving.
So life threw me a few curveballs: noise, chemical smells, and the emotional hit of my son heading off to another state. I felt overwhelmed. My adrenals were not up to the challenge and my energy, brain, and nervous system struggled.
I missed meetings, I had horrible brain fog, things didn’t get done on time, I felt wired and tired and on the verge of tears some days. It sucked.
I felt like I was trying to run underwater. Everything was heavy, difficult, and draining. The brain fog was horrible. If I was interrupted in the middle of writing chart notes or instructions for a patient, I totally lost track of what I was doing or what I wanted to say. I also noticed my eyesight getting worse after 30 min or so of working at a computer screen. All of these things were not normal for me.
The good thing is I recognized what was going on and took steps to improve my situation.
If you know someone who gets overwhelmed when life throws them one too many curveballs, or their fatigue grips them to the core, send them my way. These are my people. I’ve been there and I know how debilitating it can be.
I also know ways to restore your energy, your vitality, and help you get your life back.
