Around 80% of youth in foster care experience mental health challenges, a number that can feel overwhelming to hear.

It’s important to remember that these experiences are understandable given what many have been through. Through counseling, we can equip youth in foster care with the tools they need to live happy, fulfilling lives by providing support, healing, and trauma-informed care.

Autism acceptance starts at home (and lasts a lifetime)!

Sometimes, caregivers and support systems unintentionally praise behaviors that are actually forms of masking.

Masking is when individuals with autism — children and adults — suppress their natural traits in order to fit in. While it may appear helpful on the surface, it often leads to deep emotional exhaustion and burnout over time. This can look like someone holding back their need to stim (repetitive movements that support regulation), forcing eye contact, or changing how they naturally communicate just to feel accepted.

Instead of encouraging masking, focus on supporting safety and well-being by addressing behaviors that may be harmful — such as elopement or self-injury — while creating space for authentic expression.

Take time to learn each person’s unique way of communicating, engaging, and regulating. Whether child or adult, everyone deserves to feel safe being themselves.

Most importantly, make sure they know they are valued, respected, and accepted exactly as they are. 💙

Child Abuse Prevention starts with strong families! And strong caregivers are resilient. 💪

Research shows that how guardians respond to stressors is more important than the stressor itself when it comes to family outcomes.

One tip for resiliency is to take time for yourself, whatever that looks like for you. Because when you are fully charged, you have more energy to pour into others.

If you catch us wearing blue this month, it’s because we’re Child Abuse Prevention warriors!

Child Abuse Prevention is a popular cause, but it can be hard to know how to get involved!

💙 Start in April by wearing blue.
💙 Keep it going by getting involved in a program that supports families and kids. Because child abuse prevention begins with strong communities!

Child abuse prevention is everyone’s responsibility.

Strong communities act as buffers to child abuse, wrapping children and adults in support so that basic and emotional needs are met. Strong networks also help spot and address child abuse quickly when it happens.

We may be one of the first phone calls to respond to child abuse cases, but we’re not — and can’t be — alone in this fight. Join us in helping to protect kids.

Transitioning to a new home is tough for any child. For kids on the autism spectrum who thrive on familiarity and routine, it can be particularly difficult.

If you’re welcoming a child with autism into your home for the first time, here are some things that might help them adjust:

• If they have special interests, let that be a bridge to building trust. Ask them what they’re passionate about and engage with that.
• To help with sensory needs, your child may benefit from a dedicated space that is quiet and equipped with items like a sensory swing or things they’re familiar with.
• Eliminate the anxiety of the unknown by creating a clear, visual schedule of meals, activities, and rest times so they know exactly what to expect from their new environment.
