Herb of the Week:
Sang Bai Pi, also known as Mulberry Bark, is the root bark, not stem bark, of the Mulberry plant. It is one of the more commonly used herbs and plays an important role in many famous ancient formulas.

Sang Bai Pi is mainly used for lung-heat cough, asthma or wheezing, swollen eyes or face, difficult urination, high blood pressure, and diabetes. More recent uses also show that it is capable of reducing excitement or anxiety, repairing damaged tissue cells, accelerating wound healing, and fading of scars.

Herb of the Week:
Ji Xue Teng also known as Evergreen Wisteria, is a type of climbing vine native to East Asia. The plant derives its Chinese name because of the reddish-brown colored resin in its stem.

Ji Xue Teng is considered to be bitter and sweet in flavor and warm in nature, and is associated with the Liver meridian. It treats blood deficiency and blood stasis syndromes, and helps activate the flow of qi. It is often been used to regulate menstruation, and treat related conditions such as menstrual bleeding, dysmenorrheal and anemia. It can also help strengthen the tendons and bones, stop soreness and pain, and numbness of the hands and feet.

Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle Flower)

Jin Yin Hua is a climbing plant that can grow up to four meters in length and comes in several different varieties. The plant grows into a round shape and its leaves grow in pairs along each of its reaching branches. The Asian variety is native to the Chinese mainland as well as the island of Japan. It is usually harvested in summer just before the first bloom.

In Chinese Medicine it is often used to treat infectious diseases such as abscesses, inflammation and dysentery. When combined with Ju Hua it can also lower blood pressure and help fight off common colds by reducing coughing, sore throats and asthma.

Mu Tong (Akebia Trifoliata)
Native to northeastern China, Korea, and Japan, Mu Tong is a twining vine whose natural habitat is forest areas. In Chinese Medicine its caulis (stalk and stems) are harvested and sun dried.

Rid those painful UTI’s and damp bladder heat!
Akebia is also wonderful for healing pesky mouth and tongue sores.
3-6 grams in most formulas is typical although some formulas call for less or more.

Dan Zhu Ye - Lophatherum Leaf, family Gramineae

Also called Bamboo Leaf because of the plants strong resemblance to bamboo. It grows mainly in regions of Asia as well as throughout China. It has been a part of traditional Chinese medicine for many centuries because of the belief that this plant has a natural affinity to provide cold treatment to the body.

Dan Zhu Ye's literal translation means, black (Dan), bamboo (Zhu), leaf (Ye).

Its ancient use is very similar to modern day; to treat treat fevers, remove toxins and waste products in a person’s blood and also to improve cardiac function. In addition, it can be used to clear heat to relieve restlessness, and promote urination.

Application: Dan Zhu Ye is used for restlessness, thirst, mouth ulcers, difficult urination, oedema which are due to excessive heart-fire.

Ba Yue Zha is in the category of herbs that drains dampness and regulates water. This herb depletes problems caused by phlegm and qi stagnation such as cysts, nodules, and tumors. It is diuretic, meaning it increases the volume of urine by helping the body get rid of excess fluids. It also spreads liver qi to calm pains that are related to liver and stomach disharmony.

Ba Ji Tian is part of the group of herbs that tonify yang. It is used to tonify kidneys and strengthen yang, thus helping with problems like impotence, male/female infertility, cold/painful abdomen, and other issues that are similar. It stops wind/damp cold caused from back/leg qi pains and it also strengthens bones and sinews which helps with back pain and muscular atrophy.

Characteristics: Bitter, Warm, Acrid

Ai Ye is part of the group of herbs that stops bleeding. Unlike most of the herbs in this group, Ai Ye is a warming agent. It is used to warm up the womb and helps stop excessive menstrual or uterine bleeding. It also warms the womb to sooth and helps prevent problems caused by a cold womb that would affect a fetus.
