Is that drought stress or bacterial leaf scorch you're seeing on your trees? 🍁

It's been a wet summer here in New Jersey, but after last year's dry conditions, we're seeing a lot of trees still showing signs of stress. That's because drought stress doesn't go away right away. It can take years for trees to fully recover.

Drought stress usually shows up as even browning around the edges of the leaves. The whole canopy might look a little tired or dull, especially during a hot stretch.

Bacterial leaf scorch (BLS) looks a little different. The browning is more patchy, with an irregular yellow band between the brown and green parts of the leaf. It often starts in one part of the tree and slowly spreads from there.

Both issues can look similar at first, but the details matter. If you're seeing leaf browning, take a close look at the pattern. It could tell you a lot about what's going on.

It's that time of year! The Japanese Beetles are out and they sure are hungry. 🪲 You might spot them on roses, grapevines, cherry trees, hibiscus, and more. They are not picky eaters.

Their shiny copper shells are easy to recognize, and so is the damage. Leaves start to look like lace or get completely chewed through. This feeding hurts your plants by blocking photosynthesis and stressing them during peak growing season.

A quick tip: skip the beetle bags. They attract more beetles than they catch and can make the problem worse.
