🧬 Part 4 is here: Rebuild & Restore

Once the microbial clutter is cleared, healing can finally begin.

In this new post, we explore the critical next step in gut recovery: repairing the intestinal lining and restoring immune balance.

🔹 Learn how nutrients like L-glutamine, zinc carnosine, and vitamin A rebuild the gut barrier.
🔹 Discover the soothing power of herbal demulcents like slippery elm, DGL, and marshmallow root.
🔹 Understand how immunoglobulins and probiotics help modulate inflammation and reestablish tolerance.

This phase is not about more restriction—it is about restoration. Healing the gut lining allows everything else to settle: reactivity, inflammation, mood, and more.

💛 Healing in the In-Between 💛

“The idea of striving for some beautiful, perfect state of wellness? It mires us in eternal dissatisfaction, a goal forever out of reach. To be well now is to learn to accept whatever body and mind I currently have.”

—Suleika Jaouad, Between Two Kingdoms

Between Two Kingdoms is not just a memoir—it is a meditation on what it means to live, to heal, and to find yourself again after life is interrupted.

Suleika Jaouad’s journey through cancer is raw, poetic, and profoundly human. She does not offer tidy answers—but instead invites us to inhabit the space between illness and health, despair and hope.

At Raleigh Health & Wellness, we support patients through that uncertain space between illness and recovery—during cancer treatment, chronic pain, and emotional transitions. Her story echoes what we witness daily: quiet strength, invisible healing, and the courage to keep going.

This is a book for anyone who has ever asked: What now?

💛 Highly recommended for our community of seekers, survivors, and those walking their own road between two kingdoms.

✨ If It Sounds Too Good to Be True… It Usually Is

In the world of wellness, there is no shortage of miracle supplements or viral “hacks” that promise to fix everything overnight — boost energy, flatten your belly, improve your sleep, and heal your hormones.

But true, lasting health rarely comes from shortcuts.

It is built over time —
📅 One nourishing meal,
🛏 One night of quality sleep,
💧 One glass of water,
🧘 One moment of calm,
🏃‍♀️ One walk at a time.

If you are feeling overwhelmed or burnt out by trying to find the solution, come back to the basics. Your body is wired for rhythm, not extremes. And consistency — not perfection — is what makes a real difference.

Let us help you return to what matters most.
Raleigh Health & Wellness is here to support your long game.

Raleigh, you are showing off again. 🌻✨

There is something magical about this time of year—when the air feels warmer, the skies stretch wide in every direction, and sunflowers bloom like sunshine planted straight into the ground.

Whether you are driving past a field, walking a trail, or just catching a golden glimpse at the farmer’s market, Raleigh reminds us to pause, breathe, and notice beauty when it blooms.

🧠 Cumulative PPI Use and Dementia Risk: What the Research Shows

📚 The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study
🗓️ Published: Neurology, Oct 31, 2023

While not a brand new study, this large prospective analysis continues to raise important questions about the long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)—commonly prescribed for acid reflux and GERD—and their potential impact on brain health.

Researchers followed over 5,700 older adults and found that those using PPIs for more than 4.4 cumulative years had a 33% higher risk of developing dementia compared to non-users. Shorter durations of use and current use alone were not associated with increased risk.

🔍 Key Findings:
✔️ >4.4 years of cumulative use → 33% increased risk of incident dementia
✔️ Short-term use showed no significant risk
✔️ Results adjusted for age, s*x, race, comorbidities, and other meds

⚠️ Study Limitations to Keep in Mind:
– Observational design → shows association, not causation
– Medication use was based on self-report and inventory records
– Dementia diagnoses varied and may reflect disparities in detection
– Unmeasured lifestyle and health variables (diet, microbiome, sleep) could influence outcomes
– The biological link between PPIs and neurodegeneration remains unclear

🌿 Clinical Takeaway: For many, short-term PPI use can be appropriate. But for those relying on PPIs long-term, especially >4 years, it may be time to reassess the risks and explore alternatives.

💡 Integrative Options for Managing Reflux May Include:
• Supporting healthy stomach acid physiology (when appropriate)
• Identifying food triggers and intolerances
• Herbal and nutraceutical GI support
• Acupuncture for regulating digestion and reducing stress
• Improving motility and meal hygiene

🧠 Your gut and brain are connected. Medication decisions deserve a whole-person lens.

Rest is not a luxury—it is a necessity for sustainable health and performance.

True rest goes beyond sleep. It is about intentionally tending to the different dimensions of our inner and outer lives so we can fully recharge.

There are six types of rest, each addressing a unique need:

🔸 Physical Rest – Active or passive ways to restore the body’s energy and relieve fatigue.

🔸 Sensory Rest – Reducing overstimulation from noise, screens, and bright lights to soothe the nervous system.

🔸 Mental Rest – Easing cognitive load by creating moments of pause, silence, and reflection.

🔸 Emotional Rest – Feeling safe to express emotions honestly, without fear of judgment.

🔸 Social Rest – Spending time with those who replenish your energy while setting boundaries around draining interactions.

🔸 Creative Rest – Engaging with beauty, art, and imagination to reignite your sense of wonder and perspective.

🧭 When we invest in all six, we protect against burnout, deepen our resilience, and build a more balanced life—personally and professionally.

✨ Where do you need more rest?

What kind would truly nourish you today?

🍫 World Chocolate Day — A Chinese Medicine View 🍫

July 7th marks the day chocolate first arrived in Europe in 1550—but the healing potential of cacao resonates far beyond the West.

While cacao is not a traditional Chinese herb, in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we can understand its qualities through the lens of taste, temperature, and organ systems.

🧡 Heart and Blood Circulation

• In TCM, the bitter taste is associated with the Heart. Bitter flavors help clear Heat and promote circulation.
• Dark chocolate, which is more bitter and less processed, is thought to nourish the Heart and support Blood flow, aligning with modern research on cardiovascular health.

🌾 Spleen and Digestion

• The sweet aspect of chocolate connects it to the Spleen, which governs digestion, energy, and mental clarity.
• In small amounts, sweet flavors can tonify the Spleen and calm the mind.
• But excessive sugar or overindulgence can weaken the Spleen, contributing to Dampness and sluggish digestion.

🌀 Balance is the Medicine

High-quality, mindful chocolate can be grounding and nourishing.
But in TCM—as in life—moderation matters.

At Raleigh Health & Wellness, we honor both modern nutrition and ancient wisdom. May today be a celebration of joy, balance, and heartful nourishment.

✨What is your favorite way to enjoy chocolate?

🌿 Feeling anxious?

You might have been told to try GABA, magnesium, Vitamin B12 or L-theanine—or reach for herbs like chamomile, kava, passionflower, or valerian root.

Maybe you read about them online, heard an influencer rave, or took a friend’s well-meaning advice.

But here is the problem:
This is still a diagnosis-based model—just with nutraceuticals instead of pharmaceuticals.

True functional medicine goes deeper.

It asks:
🔸 Is this anxiety rooted in neuroinflammation?
🔸 Is the gut-brain axis involved—via vagal tone, cytokines, or microbial imbalance?
🔸 Are there nutrient depletions? Hormonal drivers? Mitochondrial dysfunction?
🔸 Is there unresolved trauma or life context that needs to be honored?

When we skip these questions and go straight to what is “good for anxiety,” we fall into the trap of green medicine—treating the symptom in a more natural form, but missing the individual in front of us.

These tools can help. But only when guided by what we see as the underlying pathophysiology in that person—not just the condition they present with.🌿

🦠 Microbial Overgrowth Before Gut Repair? Here's Why It Matters

Before we rebuild the gut lining or reintroduce probiotics, we often need to press pause—and reset.

🔍 Part 3 of our Digestion Series explores what happens when the gut terrain is overrun by the wrong organisms—think SIBO, Candida, parasites, and opportunistic bacteria.

Left unchecked, these microbes can fuel inflammation, disrupt nutrient absorption, and weaken gut barrier function.

💡 In this post, we explore:
• Signs and symptoms of overgrowth
• Common culprits and what your test results mean
• How to safely clear biofilms without harming your gut lining
• Why “repair” comes after the reset

🌿 Gentle medicine meets smart strategy. This phase sets the foundation for lasting digestive resilience.
