Keeping Your Eyes on the Prize: The number of Americans reporting vision difficulty has increased by 28% since 2010, per the CDC, with 4 in 10 U.S. adults at elevated risk for vision loss.

While people are living longer, the increasing prevalence of diabetes in the U.S. has led to a growing incidence of vision problems like diabetic retinopathy, macular edema, cataracts and glaucoma, conditions that can lead to blurred vision, vision loss and even blindness if not properly managed.

So, to maintain healthy vision, it’s important to focus on a combination of preventative measures and healthy habits. They include:

👁️ Get regular eye exams
🕶️ Wear protective eyewear
👀 Manage screen time
🥕 Eat a healthy diet
🧘 Maintain a healthy lifestyle
🩺 Manage chronic conditions

If you notice changes in your vision, have an eye injury or think you have an eye infection, see your doctor right away. If you don’t have a primary care provider, visit doctors.southtexashealthsystem.com to find one near you.

You Deserve a Good Night's Rest! Getting enough sleep isn't a luxury; it's necessary for good health. A lack of quality sleep is linked with many chronic diseases and conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity and depression.

Unfortunately, about 50 to 70 million Americans have sleep disorders, and 1 in 3 adults don't regularly get the recommended amount of uninterrupted sleep they need to protect their health, per the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute.

But there's good news! Sleep disorders can be diagnosed and treated.

The South Texas Health System Sleep Center provides diagnosis and treatment for a wide variety of sleep disorders, including insomnia, narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) and restless leg syndrome. STHS Sleep Center's comfortably furnished bedrooms provide a relaxing environment where adults and children can take the first step toward a good night's rest with a sleep study to help doctors understand your sleep patterns and identify any issues that may be disrupting it.

If you're having difficulty falling or staying asleep, experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness or feel tired even after a full night's rest, call 956-213-0403 to schedule a sleep study consultation or visit http://spklr.io/6189BEx6N.

Celebrating a Special Milestone in Helping Heart Patients Improve Their Long-Term Health: For patients with severe heart disease or those recovering from heart events, intensive cardiac rehabilitation (ICR) plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of future heart problems, improving physical and emotional well-being and enhancing overall quality of life.

The South Texas Health System Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation Program helps improve the lives of heart patients through a combination of exercise, diet and education through more frequent and rigorous cardiac rehabilitation services than those offered by standard programs.

Recently, the STHS Heart-based program welcomed its 1,000th patient since its founding five years ago.

“It's an honor to celebrate this major milestone; the achievement is a reflection of the strength and determination of our patients and the exceptional dedication of our team to help empower them on their healing journey,” says Anna Liza Esguerra, Clinical Program Director, STHS Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. “Most importantly, we recognize the guidance and leadership of our medical director, Dr. Federico Azpurua, whose vision and commitment have been instrumental in the program’s growth and success. Here’s to continued progress, stronger hearts and many more lives transformed.”

The STHS Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, launched in collaboration with Pritikin, is the only one of its kind south of San Antonio. Taking a holistic approach to recovery for heart patients, it includes exercise under medical supervision, nutrition counseling, stress management education and emotional support sessions.

Congratulations to the STHS Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation team on this momentous achievement!

The Thyroid: The Key to Energy & Health: It may be relatively small, but the thyroid produces a hormone that influences every cell, tissue and organ in the body.

Unfortunately, more than 12% of the U.S. population will develop a thyroid condition, per the American Thyroid Association, with women five to eight times more likely than men to experience thyroid problems like overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) and underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). Left untreated, thyroid issues can lead to a wide range of serious health complications, including heart problems, reproductive issues, nerve damage and even life-threatening ailments.

So, to educate Rio Grande Valley residents on the causes and risk factors of thyroid issues and their impact on a person’s quality of life, South Texas Health System will devote the latest episode of its monthly “South Texas Healthy Living” TV program to thyroid health.

The program will feature a sit-down interview with Dr. Luis M. Reyes, a board-certified general and bariatric surgeon who serves as the medical director of the South Texas Health System Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery Center, on the early warning signs and symptoms of thyroid issues, the complications associated with them and the treatment options available for those living with poor thyroid health. Additionally, the episode will feature an interview with a local Air Force veteran who struggled with fatigue and weight gain before finally being diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease and getting proper treatment, as well as cooking and exercise segments to support your thyroid health.

Don't miss our latest episode of South Texas Healthy Living this Sunday, July 27, on KVEO NBC 23 at 9:00 am.

Turning Ability into Possibility: For nearly six years, occupational therapist Melissa G. Rodriguez has helped acute patients within South Texas Health System’s facilities, primarily at STHS Heart, regain their independence in all areas of their lives, including barriers affecting their emotional, social and physical needs.

“I enjoy helping patients regain their strength and work toward the goals that are important to them, so that they can go home safely, return to engaging in their roles and improve their quality of life,” Melissa says. “I also enjoy collaborating with the different disciplines within the hospital to ensure that we develop individualized plans for each patient to be on the best road to recovery.”

Whether she's evaluating patients, customizing a treatment plan or re-evaluating patients to ensure goals are being met, Melissa is dedicated to re-teaching her patients the skills they'll need to live out their roles at home, work and in leisure activities as independently as possible.

Thank you, Melissa, for ensuring that every patient you treat achieves a level of independence that transforms their life well beyond their hospital stay at STHS Heart!
