Hot flashes, mood changes, low energy. Is this just part of the transition?

As hormone levels begin to fluctuate during (peri) menopause, many people may experience significant symptoms that impact their daily life, intimacy, and overall well-being.

Common symptoms include:

✅ Hot flashes and night sweats
✅ Irregular or absent periods
✅ Brain fog, difficulty concentrating, or problems with word finding
✅ Mood swing, anxiety, or depressive moods
✅ Heart palpitations, racing heartbeat, or changes in blood pressure
✅ Changes to skin and hair
✅ Vaginal dryness or painful s*x
✅ Low libido, sleep disturbances, or fatigue
✅ Bone, muscle, or metabolic changes

Hormone therapies (HT) are prescription medications that alleviate menopausal symptoms by restoring levels of female hormones, such as estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone, that naturally decline during the menopause transition.

💪 More than libido: how testosterone supports women’s well-being ✨

Low-dose testosterone therapy is gaining recognition as a potential option to support women through changes related to declining hormone levels.

While it’s not FDA-approved for women in the U.S. (yet), research suggests it may help with:
💫 Sexual desire & arousal, including:
~ Increased s*xual desire
~ Enhanced s*xual arousal
~ Improved or****ic function
~ Greater s*xual pleasure and responsiveness
~ Reduction in s*xual concerns and distress
💫 Energy & vitality
💫 Mood & confidence
💫 Bone & brain health
💫 Muscle tone & strength
💫 Breast health ~ testosterone may help protect breast tissue and reduce the risk of changes linked to other hormone treatments.

⚠️ Long-term safety data is still limited, and ongoing research is needed to better understand the full risk–benefit profile of testosterone use in women. It’s important to explore this only under the guidance of a qualified healthcare provider.

Testosterone plays an important role in women’s health — especially during menopause. As women age, their testosterone levels gradually decline, and by menopause, they can be about 50% lower than levels in early adulthood. This decline can lead to symptoms such as diminished s*xual desire, decre...

“Emerging research indicates that women who experience more frequent or severe hot flashes, particularly earlier in the menopausal transition, may have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease later in life.”

Somi Javaid MD discusses the unspoken realities of menopause's most common symptoms below!

Hot flashes, experienced daily by 87% of menopausal women, originate in the brain due to a hypersensitive hypothalamus reacting to dropping estrogen levels. The symptom is a full-body neurological event, often involving heart palpitations, chills, anxiety and a subsequent wave of fatigue, not just h...

✨ August is National Wellness Month ✨ A time to prioritize your body, your mind, your well-being.

Not sure where to start? Here are 5 simple ways to nurture your well-being this month:

1️⃣ Check in with your body - Be proactive about your health by keeping up with routine exams and annual check-ins.

2️⃣ Move with joy - Let movement be simple and enjoyable. A 30‑minute walk with a friend, a dance break around your house, or a free intro yoga class—move in a way that makes you feel good.

3️⃣ Nourish your body - Choose foods that make you feel energized and satisfied. Adding colorful vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats can support your well-being while making meals enjoyable.

4️⃣ Enjoy a mocktail - Mocktails offer many benefits over alcohol-containing beverages, including hydration, cost-effectiveness, and fewer calories. Mocktails can also serve as the perfect opportunity to sneak in additional nutrients.

5️⃣ Sleep better, feel better - Prioritize rest. Dim lights, ditch the screens, and let yourself unwind each evening. A calm night can lead to a brighter tomorrow.

Small shifts, big impact 🌿 Wellness doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s about little daily choices that make you feel good.

🚨 Most doctors get less than 4 hours of menopause training in their entire education.

The result? Patients face avoidable health risks—heart disease, osteoporosis, depression—because symptoms go untreated.

At , our session "Menopause 101 Was Missing and It's Still Killing Women" will reveal how supplemental education is closing that gap.

Is menopause keeping you up at night? Let’s talk sleep!

Did you know it is estimated that over 50% of individuals experiencing menopause worldwide face sleep disorders, including insomnia, restless legs syndrome, and sleep apnea.

Sleep disturbances often begin or worsen during perimenopause, the transitional period leading up to menopause. Hormonal fluctuations during this time can contribute to problems like insomnia, restless legs syndrome, and other sleep issues, with global prevalence rates exceeding 40%.*

During menopause, sleep disturbances are common and can significantly contribute to heightened feelings of anxiety and depression, underscoring the importance of addressing both sleep and emotional health during this time.*

At herMD, we specialize in comprehensive menopause care, and sleep is part of that picture.⁣

It’s time to flip the script on menopause and hormone therapy.

For decades, women have been asking, ‘What will happen to me if I take hormones?’ The better question is: ‘What will happen if I don’t?’

The answer: Increased risk of cardiovascular disease, fractures, dementia, hospitalization from urosepsis, to name a few.

The outdated WHI data and the FDA’s black box warning on vaginal estrogen have fueled fear, not facts. Localized estrogen has never been shown in a single study to increase dementia, breast cancer, heart attack, or stroke risk.

Why hormones? Did you know:

✔️ Systemic estrogen therapy leads to a decrease in mortality by 30%
✔️ HT is associated with decreased risk of dementia, Parkinson’s, ALS, MS, and Alzheimer’s
✔️ Estrogen is the only therapy shown to decrease fracture risk by 30–50%, yet only 4% of eligible patients take it
✔️ Vaginal hormone therapy can prevent 50% of UTIs

Menopause education was a casualty of WHI, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Not all hormones are the same—route, dose, and formulation matter. Women deserve evidence-based care and informed choices, not fear-driven guidelines.

In honor of Equal Research Day, we’re spotlighting the urgent need for equity in women’s health research and care. Despite advancements, significant gaps remain:

📊 Women live longer than men, but spend 25% more of their lives in poor health

⏱️ In ERs, women wait up to 30 minutes longer than men for pain relief

💰 The NIH spent just 8.8% of its research budget on women’s health from 2013–2023

⏳ Women are 50% more likely to delay care due to long wait times

🩺 Only 7% of clinicians report feeling equipped to manage menopausal symptoms

⚖️ Just 4% of women ages 50–59 use hormone therapy, despite it being the gold standard treatment for many menopausal symptoms

This isn’t just about statistics. It’s about real women navigating a system that wasn’t built with them in mind. To close these gaps, we need care that’s accessible, evidence-based, and reflective of women’s lived experiences. It’s time to reimagine what equitable healthcare looks like.

So what are we doing about it? ✨ Thoughtfully designed virtual care can help bridge these divides with flexibility, personalization, and real support.
