Fundamentals of the squat.
1. Create a Solid Foundation with great foot attachment to the ground. Make an arch in the foot by grabbing ground with the toes. Load the heels and connect to the floor by making a corkscrew type action.
2. Knee position drive the knees outward so they track above or outside the heels. This activates the muscles that abduct the hip and allow the hips to function properly. If done /jkbincorrectly, this can lead to hip impingement with limitations in ROM and possible injury.
3. Draw a large breath into the belly and brace against the breath to stabilize the spine. e.g. Squeezing a 2 liter bottle with your core.
4. Pull your shoulder blades together to create a great postural position upon which the bar will sit in a back squat.
5. Pack the neck by Tucking the chin back so the chin stacks directly above the collar bones. Creating a double chin. Do NOT rotate the chin up and look toward the ceiling. We want Spinal alignment.
6. Begin the squat by reaching the hips back. When the hips go back, the shoulders must go forward. Once the shoulders cover the knees, begin to sink the hips.
7. Most of the squats we teach descend until the front of the thigh is parallel to the floor. With the Olympic squat being the deepest variation. This variation goes hamstrings to the heels.
8. Once depth has been achieved, drive up through the top of the head leading with the shoulders and head.
9. Release the breath of air that was used to help with bracing and spinal stability. After a couple more breaths, draw in another large breath for bracing and execute another rep.

Huge shoutout to these incredible young men!

These three athletes haven't just trained with us, they've practically grown up here!

β€’ James Cobb: From a tall, skinny freshman to a Division I Offensive Lineman at the University of Idaho, James has transformed himself through hard work and dedication. Desert Mountain's 1441 rushing yards and zero sacks allowed stand as a testament to his leadership as a 3-year varsity starter, 2x All-Region selection, and Senior Offensive Captain.

β€’ Krush Sowers: Pinnacle High School's powerhouse Center is headed to Southern Utah University! Krush wasn't always the powerhouse he is today. This 3-year varsity starter, 2x All-District player, and Senior Team Captain shattered records, becoming only the second person at Pinnacle to achieve the prestigious 1200 lb Club (Clean,Bench, Squat). His leadership paved the way for a dominant offensive line with 1853 rushing yards and zero sacks allowed.

β€’ Carson Kolb: This Horizon High School standout is taking his talents to Oregon State University as a Tight End! A Second Team All-State selection and First Team All-District & All-Region player in both 2022 and 2023, Carson's defensive prowess is undeniable: Team Captain (Sr.), Alt Captain (Jr.), 78 Total Tackles, 10 Sacks, and a Pick-6!His offensive contributions speak for themselves too: 8 Receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown.

It's been an absolute honor and privilege to help these young men develop into not only incredible athletes, but also fine young men. We can't wait to see what they accomplish at the next level!

From Chubby Cub to Big Sky Beast: Watch Out Southern Utah, Krush Sowers is Coming!

Remember that 13-year-old with the twinkle in his eye and a 220-pound frame held hostage by hip impingement and dysfunction? Yeah, that was Krush Sowers, not a name you wanted to mess with even back then. Fast forward a few years of sweat, manual therapy magic, and enough squats to power a city, and look at him now! Krush is about to unleash his explosiveness on the Division I stage at Southern Utah University, and we couldn't be prouder.
This journey wasn't a walk in the park. Krush fought through limitations most wouldn't even understand, attacking his pain with the same grit with which he blocks defenders. His dedication to rehab, his consistent training, and his unwavering desire to be the best – that's what forged the monster you see on the field today.
Krush, you're not just a freakish athlete, you're an inspiration. You turned limitations into fuel, adversity into opportunity, and doubt into dynamite. Southern Utah is getting a force of nature, a leader, and a teammate who leaves it all on the field.
But beyond the football, we are proud of the man you've become. Your kindness, your humor, and your unwavering determination – you wear those qualities like a championship ring.
Can't wait to see you crush it in crimson and white, Krush! Go Thunderbirds!

P.S. To everyone reading this, give Krush a follow and show him some love! He deserves it all.

As mentors and coaches, we believe that we can and should learn from our athletes. We have most certainly done this while working with this young man. Trey has an unrelenting desire for knowledge that stretches everyone around him. One must grow to simply keep up with his vivacious pursuit of excellence. Working with him for the past five years has been exceptionally rewarding and we couldn't be more thrilled to extend our heartfelt congratulations on his incredible achievement of signing with Rice University's baseball program! This is a testament to his unwavering dedication, passion, and exceptional talent.
From the moment we met, we were immediately struck by his infectious enthusiasm and unwavering commitment to become the best baseball player he could be. He always embraces the challenges, relentlessly pushes his limits, and has never shied away from putting in the extra hours to hone his skills.
His passion for the game and self improvement is truly inspiring. He approaches every session with an unwavering focus and determination to improve each day. He has never been afraid to step outside of his comfort zone, to experiment with new techniques, and to constantly seek ways to grow. This unwavering dedication has set him apart, and it's what has propelled him to this remarkable milestone.
Rice University is fortunate to have him join their ranks. They're gaining not just a talented athlete but also a remarkable young man with a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and a genuine love for the game. We have no doubt that he will continue to excel at Rice, both on and off the field.

Congratulations to Coach Ben Burnell on acquiring his certification of Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)!

It has been amazing to watch Ben grow from an athlete with whom we worked beginning in 2007 through his military service, in the Navy, into a young Coach while attaining his Bachelors from Arizona State University and remain incredibly excited for him in this next step of his career by achieving his CSCS.

Ben is an extremely kind, loyal and hard working young man. He cares about his athletes more than any coach with whom we’ve worked. Gaining his CSCS was a big achievement and we are incredibly proud of him.

This certification is a testament to Ben's dedication to his profession and his commitment to providing his athletes with the best possible training. I have no doubt that he will continue to be a successful coach for many years to come.

Thank you for all your hard work, Ben! We are so proud of you!
