My clients who are actively involved in their grandchildren’s lives will often share with me that their grandchildren are keeping them young. They play with them, attend recitals or sporting events, and they just have a desire to see them grow and contribute to their lives.
I had a client, a widower, who nearly died and had to have a triple heart bypass. He lived by himself about half an hour away from his daughter. The entire family made the decision that my client should live closer to family. My client moved into a house down the street from his daughter. His granddaughter and great-grandson moved in with him. He said that living with his great-grandson gave him a spark of life that he hadn’t felt in years. He was playing with him and teaching him, and he’s just excited to see his great-grandson grow. In return, he has family living with him and down the street from him who can be there for him, if need be.
If you’re a grandparent and active in your grandchild’s life, do you feel it makes a difference in your health?
If you’re a parent, watching your parent and child interact, do you see the health effects on your parents from the interaction between grandparent and grandchild?
