June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month! The Alzheimer’s Association shares 10 simple habits that can protect your brain health. But do you know WHY they help? Let’s break it down today in this post. Because knowing what these habits do to your brain makes it easier to take action and stay motivated. Share this information with a loved one or caregiver and dive into these habits this month.

1. Challenge your mind: Boosts new brain connections by enhancing neuroplasticity and builds cognitive reserve.

2. Learn something new: Learning strengthens neural networks and delays neurodegeneration.

3. Exercise and movement: Moving increases cerebral blood flow and boosts BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) which supports new neurons and synapsis.

4. Protect your head: Stay safe and protect your head! Wearing a helmet for outside activities such as biking or for certain physical therapy can prevents traumatic brain injury and reduces risk of chronic inflammation.

5. Be smoke-free: This reduces oxidative stress and helps keep your brain’s blood vessels healthy and strong.

6. Control your blood pressure: Monitoring and maintaining a healthy BP prevents brain blood vessel damage and stroke risk.

7. Manage diabetes: If you have diabetes, it is important to monitor it. This helps your brain use glucose properly and prevents blood vessel damage and inflammation.

8. Eat right: Healthy eating provides antioxidants that protect the brain and support healthy synapses for learning and memory.

9. Maintain a healthy weight: This can reduce harmful inflammation and improve insulin use, helping your brain get the energy it needs to function well.

10. Finally, get some good sleep: Sleeping well clears brain toxins like beta-amyloid, which is linked to Alzheimer’s. Deep sleep also consolidates memory and supports synaptic homeostasis — rebalancing brain connectivity for learning and memory.

For questions on in-home support for individuals or loved ones in Southern California living with Alzheimer’s and memory loss, feel free to reach out at Assistance in Home Care (AIHC) at (844) 490-9755.

Falls can be scary. If you discover that your aging parent or family member has fallen, your first instinct might be to quickly help them up off the ground. However, it is best to remain calm and respond properly to avoid any injury.

Consider these 5 tips when an elderly parent or family member has fallen in the home:

1. Stay calm. Calm energy helps everyone in the room, including your family member. If possible, encourage slow deep breaths to create calmness.

2. Call for help. Contact emergency services on the phone.

3. Check for injuries. Look for bruising, bleeding, or signs of pain. Gently ask them where it hurts.

4. Do not move your parent or family member if you believe a series injury has occurred. Sprains, broken bones, or severe pain may require emergency medical assistance. If they cannot bear weight, do not attempt to move them.

5. If they appear uninjured and they want to get up, go slow. Follow a safe and slow method for assisting them. Pause or stop if they feel any dizziness, pain, or they get tired. Let them move at their own pace.

Responding--rather than reacting--can help prevent injuries after a fall.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2025 (WEAAD) is on June 15. It is a worldwide day to stand up for the rights and dignity of older adults. We want to raise awareness about Elder Abuse—a vital reminder to honor and protect our elders, especially our aging parents in the care of others.

Signs of elder abuse to watch for:
⦁ unexplained fractures, bruises, or swelling
⦁ pain from light touch
⦁ suspicious marks or restraints
⦁ withdrawal or fear around certain people
⦁ caregiver blocking visits
⦁ loss of interest in social activities

If you sense that something is “off” or that there are behavioral changes to your elderly parent under another’s care, review these signs. To report cases in California, please contact your local county Adult Protective Services.

Company Overview

How We Got Started

Our story began with siblings Ramona and Ronnie. Ronnie was having a difficult time adjusting and keeping up with his new routines. After struggling with a franchised caregiving company and losing her brother to cancer, Ramona decided she could inspire compassion and ensure the wellbeing for people just like her brother. In June of 2006, Assistance In Home Care became a licensed In-Home care provider and was dedicated to working with the community and their loved ones in remitting times.
