We made a brief appearance in King5 to speak on National Su***de Prevention and Awareness month. Video clip included in the link.

The pandemic is hitting LGBTQ youth especially hard as they deal with the stressors they had before COVID-19, and now the impacts of the virus.

King5 will be interviewing me tomorrow at 9 AM PST. Not sure if it'll be aired at that time but wanted to let folx know in case you wanna try tuning in.

STORY SYNOPSIS: LGBTQ youth are especially suffering during this pandemic due to isolation and losing contact with a lot of their support groups. They were also at one point forced to stay home with rejecting family members in some cases who are not supportive. Even before COVID, LGBTQ youth were at a higher risk for depression, su***de, drug and alcohol use. I was hoping to tie this story into National Su***de Prevention and Awareness Month.

Black Trans History Month - Lucy Hicks Anderson (1886-1954)

She was born in Kentucky and at an early age expressed the wish that people call her Lucy rather than her birth name. Surprisingly for the time a doctor advised her mother to raise her as a girl. In her life she married twice, was a professional baker and chef, a socialite and a s*x worker. In Oxnard California she ran a boarding house that operated as a speakeasy and brothel. She ultimately went to prison for perjury because in the eyes of the law she "lied" about her s*x on her marriage certificates. Her response was simple and to the point: "I defy any doctor in the world to prove that I am not a woman, I have lived, dressed, acted just what I am, a woman."

The Handbook of LGBT Elders refers to Lucy as "one of the earliest documented cases of an African-American transgender person."

Hello, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Michelle Jaquish (she/her/hers) and I am one of the mental health therapists that works at Spectrum. I am a 2016 graduate of the University of Washington's Master's in Social Work program, and previously completed my undergraduate education at the UW in 2011. I like to think of a therapists' role as more of a "guide" that works alongside clients that may identify as community organizers, activists, and those in the helping professions (social workers, nurses, behavioral health care providers, etc.), with a specific focus on q***r Asian-Pacific Islander femmes and women of color by connecting them to internal and external resources so that they can continue their work to uplift the communities they serve. I am called to this work as a practicing social worker myself that has worked through cycles of burnout through more holistic, person-centered, near-peer approaches that align the body, mind, and spirit as a means to ground, center, and move through burnout stressors to rejuvenate and strengthen myself as well as the communities I serve in my therapy practice.

I utilize an array of approaches with clients including and not limited to clinical case management, dance/body movement, spiritual work, with a dash of artistic creativity. My approach draws upon my lived experience as a q***r, non-monogamous, first generation Filipina American. I spend free time foraging in nature for objects to create unique jewelry, working on dance routines that come to her when her spirit is fed and full, and nerding out on sci-fi and comics.

Having the self honored is core to healing

Inclusive healing spaces that are safe, affirming, and culturally relevant for QTPOC* are a rare find. This is especially true when it comes to bodywork (i.e. massage therapy).

Spectrum Mind & Body Works seeks to be one of the few wellness care providers in Seattle that specialize and cater to the QTPOC community for mind and body wellness.
