5 Questions to Ask at Your Next GYN Visit!
1. "Are my screenings up to date?"
Ask about Pap smears, HPV tests, breast exams, and STI screenings based on your age and risk.

2. “What birth control options are available for my needs?”
Your needs may change over time. Talk through hormonal vs. non-hormonal options, side effects, and goals.

3. "Can we talk about my menstrual cycle?"
Heavy, painful, or irregular periods aren’t always “normal.” Share any changes or symptoms—your cycle is a vital sign!

4. "Is what I’m experiencing with va**nal health normal?"
Don’t be afraid to ask about discharge, odor, dryness, or pain. Nothing is TMI with your GYN.

5. "What lifestyle changes could support my reproductive health?"
Diet, stress, exercise, and sleep all affect your GYN health. Get personalized tips based on your stage of life.

✨ Prevalence
Maternal mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are common during pregnancy and the postpartum period. It’s estimated that around 10-15% of pregnant women and new mothers experience these conditions worldwide.

✨ Postpartum Depression (PPD)
Postpartum depression is a serious mood disorder that can develop after childbirth. It can affect a mother’s ability to care for herself and her baby. Symptoms may include sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, fatigue, changes in appetite, and feelings of worthlessness or guilt.

✨Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), are also common among pregnant women and new mothers. Anxiety symptoms may include excessive worry, restlessness, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.

✨ Risk Factors
Several factors can increase the risk of maternal mental health disorders, including a history of depression or anxiety, stressful life events, lack of social support, financial difficulties, and complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

By raising awareness about maternal mental health and improving access to support and resources, we can better support the well-being of mothers and families around the world.

👉🏽 What is preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication marked by high blood pressure and signs of organ damage, most often affecting the liver and kidneys. It usually develops after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

💡 Key Facts:
• Affects 1 in 25 pregnancies in the U.S.
• Can lead to preterm birth, seizures, and other life-threatening issues if untreated.
• Often occurs without noticeable symptoms—that’s why regular checkups matter.

👀 Signs to Watch For:
• Severe headaches
• Blurred vision or light sensitivity
• Swelling in face or hands
• Upper abdominal pain
• Sudden weight gain
• Shortness of breath

Preeclampsia can happen to anyone—even in a healthy pregnancy. Awareness and early care save lives.

Why do we celebrate Women's Health Month? ♥️
Women face unique health challenges—yet they’re often overlooked in care and research.

👉🏽 Women face unique health challenges—yet they’re often overlooked in care and research.
💡 Only 11% of women over 35 feel very satisfied with the healthcare they receive.” — National Women's Health Survey

👉🏽 80% of women feel dismissed by a doctor at some point.
👉🏽 Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women.
👉🏽 Only ⅓ of clinical trial data includes women.
💡 “Despite these stats, women often report feeling their concerns are downplayed or dismissed during healthcare visits.” — American Heart Association

👉🏽 Celebrating Women's Health Month means acknowledging the unique experiences and challenges women face in healthcare.

It’s not just about raising awareness—it’s about empowering women to take control of their health and advocating for systems that provide better care, research, and support.

WHY DO WE RECOMMEND WEIGHT LOSS MEDICATIONS FOR OUR GYNECOLOGY PATIENTS?

If you have been diagnosed with obesity (BMI ≥30), you may be experiencing other health issues that we often see in our gynecology office.

Weight loss can be a significant part of your treatment plan at The Gynecology Institute of Chicago. If you have been diagnosed with obesity and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), infertility, stress incontinence, or sexual dysfunction—or if you want to reduce your risk of breast, ovarian, or uterine cancers—then you may benefit from FDA-approved GLP-1 agonist weight loss medications such as Wegovy or similar treatments.

Why Does Obesity Matter?
Obesity is a multi-factorial condition influenced by genetic, environmental, and social factors. Genetics alone can account for up to 70% of the risk of developing obesity.

At The Gynecology Institute of Chicago, we work with you to address:
✅ What you can control – Healthy nutrition & physical activity counseling
✅ What you can’t control – Prescription medications that assist in weight loss

By taking a comprehensive approach, we aim to help improve underlying gynecological issues, such as irregular periods, that may be impacted by excess weight.

How Weight Loss Can Improve Gynecologic Health:

🔬 Cancer Prevention
Obesity is linked to 13 types of cancer, including ovarian, uterine, and breast cancers.
Losing weight can significantly reduce your risk.

👶 Infertility
Obese women are 3 times more likely to experience infertility than those with a normal BMI.
Even 2-5% weight loss can improve ovulatory cycles and increase the chance of natural conception.

⚕️ PCOS (Polycystic O***y Syndrome)
PCOS and obesity are often linked, with insulin resistance playing a major role.
Symptoms like weight gain, infertility, and irregular periods can improve with 5-15% weight loss.
Weight loss also lowers the risk of heart disease, the #1 killer of women.

🚽 Urinary Stress Incontinence
Losing 5-10% of body weight can significantly reduce leakage and urgency symptoms.

❤️‍🔥 Sexual Dysfunction
Weight loss has been shown to improve sexual function in women—who wouldn’t want that?
