Tara Home

Tara Home Tara Home is a home for terminally ill individuals in their last few months of life. Additional education is provided in monthly meetings.

Around-the-clock care is provided by a “family” of trained volunteers and friends and family of the patient. Tara Home offers a place to live and compassionate care for those who are near the end of life and who need more care than their family and friends are able to provide. We accept applicants regardless of religious denomination and will make every effort to meet the individual’s spiritual ne

eds. To be accepted in Tara Home, the resident must be a patient of a hospice and meet their criteria for admission. Hospice provides medical, nursing, social and spiritual services, as well as medical equipment and medications and will create a plan of care for the resident of Tara Home. Volunteer caregivers are drawn from the community-at-large, and are able to offer 4-8 hours of service each week. They receive an initial training including hands-on care, emotional and spiritual needs of the terminally ill and an understanding of the dying process. Other volunteers are available for support services, such as errands, laundry, cleaning, massage and acupuncture.

Local folks, Alicia has arranged that we can again utilize the nursing skills lab to practice bedside skills at Cabrillo College on May 31. We realize this is a busy time with graduations and some people could be out of town. If you are planning to attend the training please let us know. If you have friends interested in volunteering at Tara Home please give them my contact information as this training is a great experience for all potential caregivers.

Q: My wife died unexpectedly a few months ago. As the holidays approach, friends and family are kindly inviting me to parties and encouraging me to visit, but I’m not sure how much I’ll feel like celebrating this year. How can I face what’s supposed to be such a happy time when I’m still dealing with my grief?

A: The holidays are a tough time to grieve; knowing they will be difficult may help us understand and accept our reactions and tap into the things we can do to help ourselves cope. A useful guide can be the “Three Cs of Coping with Grief during the Holidays”: Choose. During the holidays it is easy to get involved in activities that increase our pain, but we can decide what activities we wish to participate in and who we want to be with. Finding ways to recognize and acknowledge the person who has died, such as lighting a candle or giving a holiday toast, can bring a positive focus to our grief. Communicate. It is important that we discuss our choices with others, especially those who are affected by them, as their ways of dealing with grief may be different. Compromise. When we communicate, we may find that our feelings and needs, the very ways that we cope, will differ, and we will need to find space for compromise. Nothing changes the fact that the holidays can be especially difficult while grieving. But as we choose our actions, communicate our choices with others, and find suitable compromises, we may find that they are bearable. And that gives us renewed strength and hope.

Home health week starts today! Home health care offers medical services at home to treat a chronic health condition or help a patient recover from illness, injury, or surgery. Some people start home health care after a health decline or serious medical diagnosis. Many people transition to home health care after a stay in a hospital, rehab center, or skilled nursing facility. The primary goals are to help people recover and stay as independent as possible.

Join us this week as we celebrate the many home health providers and staff members nationwide who support patients and families at home during critical times of transition.
