My husband and I have a small farm in Albany, Vermont where I make the cold process soap using the milk from our Alpine and Nubian goats to make our soap. Cold Process soap is made by mixing fatty acids (oils) with sodium hydroxide (lye) which then triggers the saponification process. Saponification is the chemical reaction between the oils and lye that creates the soap. When I make goat milk soap
I need to make sure that my mixture does not heat up too much during this process or it can burn my milk. The easiest way to avoid this is to add lye very slowly to frozen raw milk in small amounts to keep the milk from overheating. I then add the goat milk/lye solution to melted oils, and then pour into molds for 24 to 48 hrs. It then needs to “cure” on racks for 4 to 6 weeks so the excess water will evaporate. Goat milk contains alpha-hydroxy acids such as lactic acid which helps remove dead skin cells. Goat milk also has many vitamins and minerals including D, C, B1, B6, B12, and E that feed the skin and are absorbed into the body. Some scientists believe that selenium which is also present in goat’s milk has an important role in fighting skin cancer. The oils that I use in my soaps also have their own benefits such as:
Coconut oil adds a wonderful skin nourishing, fluffy lather and makes a good hard soap. Palm oil has a high percentage of saturated fat, and creates a hard long lasting mild soap. Olive oil is rich in vitamins and minerals and contains some proteins. Olive oil is nourishing and calming to the skin and is even believed to have cell regenerative capabilities. Castor oil is very soothing and lubricating because it is rich in fatty acids. Beeswax has emollient, soothing and softening properties that help skin retain moisture. Shea Butter has long been known for its skin nourishing vitamins A & E and its moisturizing and conditioning properties. Avocado oil is rich in vitamins A, D and E; contains proteins, lecithin, and amino acids. This highly therapeutic oil is said to have healing and regenerating properties. Sweet Almond oil is a great emollient for softening and conditioning skin. It is great for eczema, psoriasis and itchy, dry and inflamed skin. Many of the essential oils that I use also have skin health benefits.
