Did you know that regularly consuming fruits and vegetables (~5 servings per day) can lower risk of cardiovascular disease, microbiome dysfunction, and other obesity-related diseases?
A study by Guo and colleagues compared two groups of obese mice. Researchers formulated a blended powder containing 24 of the most common fruits and veggies consumed in the U.S. One group was given the powder, while the other was not.
What was found?
Mice fed the powder throughout their life showed:
1) Decreased plaque in their veins and arteries
2) Decreased levels of LDL-cholesterol (bad cholesterol)
3) Greater diversity and increased amounts of healthy gut bacteria
All of these results were regardless of weight loss! Take home message: eat your fruits and veggies.
