👩‍👧 Not every session needs to include your child.

At Children’s Therapy Center, we intentionally build in parent-only sessions every 8 weeks or so.

Why do we do this?
Because parents deserve space.
Space to ask questions.
Space to reflect on how things are going.
And space to talk through strategies, concerns, or wins, without also needing to keep one eye on a busy child.

Therapy isn’t just about teaching skills. It’s also about building trust, supporting the whole family, and making sure parents feel confident and included every step of the way.

Sometimes the most meaningful progress happens in these quiet, uninterrupted conversations.

Co-regulation comes in all shapes and sizes. 🧑‍🧒
And it’s a foundational skill kids must have before we can expect them to self-regulate.

For many children, co-regulation starts through connection. With caregivers, therapists, peers… and sometimes, even therapy animals. 🐾

Before kids can manage big feelings or navigate overwhelming environments on their own, they need repeated experiences of feeling safe, seen, and supported with someone. That’s co-regulation, and it’s the heart of everything we do.

🚽 Potty training can be one of the most frustrating milestones for both kids and parents. But when it’s not going as expected, it’s important to ask why.

As pediatric occupational therapists, we understand that toileting is a complex skill that involves many areas of development. For some children, the challenge is related to interoception, the body’s ability to sense internal signals like hunger, thirst, or the need to use the bathroom. If a child has trouble noticing or interpreting these signals, it can be incredibly hard to recognize when they need to go until it’s too late.

For others, toileting challenges may be linked to:
✨ Sensory processing differences. The feeling of a cold toilet seat, the sound of flushing, or the sensation of wiping might be uncomfortable or distressing.
✨ Motor planning and coordination. Getting to the bathroom, pulling pants down, or balancing on the toilet can take more physical skill than we often realize.
✨ Emotional regulation or anxiety. Past accidents, pressure to succeed, or general anxiety can turn toileting into a source of stress.
✨ Body awareness difficulties. Some kids have trouble feeling where their body is in space, which can make it hard to position themselves or recognize when they’re done.

These are just some of the reasons potty training might not be going smoothly. There are many other possible factors, and each child’s experience is unique.

Occupational therapy can help by breaking down the process, addressing the underlying challenges, and building toileting routines that feel safe, supportive, and developmentally appropriate.

If your child is struggling with potty training, you’re not alone. It doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. Some kids just need a different kind of support to get there. 💛

11 years. 11 lessons.
This month, we’re celebrating 11 years of Children’s Therapy Center. When I first opened our doors, I was a pediatric OT with a big dream and so much still to learn-about leadership, about team building, about therapy that truly honors the whole child and family.

Over the years, this practice has grown in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Not just in size, but in depth. In clarity. In heart.

This carousel shares 11 lessons I’ve learned along the way. They are lessons about what it means to build a values-driven business. To lead with intention. To support families through moments big and small. To do work that matters.

To every family who has walked through our doors, to every therapist who has helped shape this place, and to everyone who believed in the mission from the beginning: thank you. You’ve helped make Children’s Therapy Center what it is today.

Here’s to what comes next. 💛

Sometimes the right therapist can change everything.

But the wrong one? That can do more harm than good.

If you’ve ever chosen not to start therapy because something didn’t feel right — or decided to discontinue because the fit wasn’t working — you are not alone.

Maybe the therapist’s approach didn’t align with your values.
Maybe your child wasn’t connecting.
Maybe your gut just said, “This isn’t it.”

Therapy should feel safe. Respectful. Relational.

You’re allowed to ask questions, trust your instincts, and hold out for a better fit.

Starting or continuing therapy when something feels off isn’t always the best choice.

Saying “no” or “not right now” is not failure — it’s discernment.

My child skipped crawling... does it matter?
This is a question we hear all the time — and it is a great one.

Here is what we want parents to know:
Crawling is an incredibly valuable developmental stage. While not every baby crawls in the traditional hands-and-knees pattern, the movements and skills that crawling builds are important for future learning and development.

Crawling helps support:✅ Core strength and stability✅ Shoulder and arm strength✅ Visual-motor skills (eyes working together with body movements)✅ Bilateral coordination (using both sides of the body together)✅ Body and spatial awareness✅ Motor planning and rhythm✅ Hand development and readiness for fine motor tasks

That said, we also do not want parents to panic if their child skipped crawling. Babies and children develop on different paths.

And here is the good news — even if a child did not crawl as a baby, it is never too late to build those underlying skills.

Activities like climbing, crawling through tunnels, obstacle courses, bear walking, and cross-body movements can all help support these important areas of development at any age.

So rather than focusing on what was "missed," we encourage families to think about what opportunities can still be provided now to strengthen these foundations.

If you are wondering what types of movement would be helpful for your child, we are always here to help guide you.

Movement matters. And it is never too late to support it. Join us at Mastering Motor Milestones on Wednesday!

Top 5 reasons families come to us
Every child is unique, and so are the reasons families seek out therapy. But over the years, we have noticed some common themes.
Here are the top 5 reasons families come to Children’s Therapy Center:
1️⃣ Motor delays or coordination concernsWhether it is crawling, walking, jumping, handwriting, or sports skills — we help children build the motor foundations they need for everyday life.
2️⃣ Sensory processing differencesSome children are easily overwhelmed by sights, sounds, textures, or movement. Others are constantly seeking input. We help children and families understand sensory needs and develop strategies for regulation.
3️⃣ Feeding challengesWhen picky eating, oral sensitivities, or mealtime struggles impact growth, nutrition, or family routines, we help children expand their comfort and skills around food.
4️⃣ Behavioral and emotional regulationBig emotions, difficulty with transitions, or challenges in group settings often have sensory or motor components. We support children in building the regulation skills they need to thrive.
5️⃣ Building independence in daily activitiesFrom dressing and grooming to play and social participation, we help children gain confidence and independence in their daily lives.
If you see your child in any of these areas, you are not alone. We are here to support you and your family every step of the way.

Comprehensive sensory based occupational therapy clinic in San Jose, CA.

As a parent you have watched your child struggle both at home and at school but haven’t quite been able to put your finger on what is causing the challenge. You notice your child is starting to lose self-confidence and is unwilling to try hard things. It seems like your child has big reactions and becomes upset easily and you don’t know how to help her.

Many children with sensory processing challenges aren’t receiving adequate supports in school or through traditional medical models.

It doesn’t have to be that way. AVCTC is ready to help your child and family feel “Joie de Vivre” (joy in life).
