June 27 is PTSD Awareness Day

PTSD can feel like you're always bracing for the worst, emotionally shut down, or haunted by memories that won't stay in the past. It's not a weakness — it's your nervous system trying to protect you long after the danger is gone.

The good news? PTSD is treatable.
And we know what works.

According to the American Psychological Association, the first-line treatments for PTSD are trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapies — including:

- Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
- Prolonged Exposure (PE)
- Cognitive Therapy for PTSD

These treatments are strongly recommended by the APA because they consistently lead to meaningful and lasting symptom reduction.

It’s important to know what the science supports — so you can make informed choices.

If you're struggling with symptoms like avoidance, hypervigilance, or emotional numbing, help is available. You are not alone, and you are not broken.

💙 Start by reaching out to us today. Our doctoral-level psychologists are ready to help whenever you're ready.

June is PTSD Awareness Month
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a deeply distressing event. While originally conceptualized in relation to combat or catastrophic events, we now know that PTSD can arise from a wide range of experiences—including those that are more chronic, relational, or subtle in nature.

What Is PTSD?
PTSD involves a constellation of symptoms—such as intrusive thoughts, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbing, avoidance, shame, and relational difficulties—that reflect the nervous system’s attempts to survive and make sense of danger. These are not signs of weakness—they are signs of adaptation.

Prevalence and Impact
PTSD affects nearly 1 in 13 people in the United States over their lifetime. Its effects extend beyond the individual. Left untreated, PTSD can influence family systems, romantic partnerships, parenting dynamics, workplace functioning, and physical health. At a broader level, the societal burden includes increased healthcare costs, disability, and intergenerational transmission of distress.

Expanding Our Understanding of Trauma
The traditional diagnostic model of PTSD relies on Criterion A, which defines a qualifying traumatic event. However, in clinical practice, we see many individuals with the full symptom profile of PTSD—yet whose experiences do not meet the narrow bounds of Criterion A. This includes those impacted by childhood emotional neglect, persistent invalidation, medical trauma, or systemic injustice.

This tells us an important truth:
Trauma is not only the event—it is the body and brain’s reaction to what felt threatening, overwhelming, or inescapable. It is a subjective experience, and its impact is shaped by context, relationship, and meaning.

You Are Not Alone
If you’ve struggled with symptoms of PTSD, you are far from alone. These symptoms are a normal response to abnormal or prolonged distress, and they do not have to last forever. Healing is possible—with the right support and the right plan.

At Breyta, we specialize in trauma-focused, evidence-based care. We meet you with compassion and skill to help you heal.

Big congratulations to our very own Dr. Liz Hoose, who was recently featured in the APA Monitor for her thoughtful contribution to the article, “A Meaningful Life After Religion.”

In it, she offers compassionate insight into what it means to explore identity, purpose, and healing after stepping away from religious structures. We're so proud to see her work recognized on a national level!

At Breyta, we know that religious trauma, spiritual abuse, and the complexities of leaving high-control religion are all too common—and yet often overlooked. That’s why we’re proud to offer secular therapy for clients navigating these deeply personal challenges. Dr. Hoose specializes in this work and brings both clinical skill and deep empathy to each session.

If you’re looking for support that doesn’t impose a spiritual framework—but can help you reconstruct one that feels authentic and your own—we’re here. Reach out today to schedule with Dr. Hoose.
