🕊️ In Loving Memory: Sister Mary Alexius Murray, SSJ 🕊️

HCA Florida Mercy Hospital joins in mourning the passing of Sister Mary Alexius Murray, SSJ, who died on July 20, 2025, at the age of 99.

Born in County Galway, Ireland, Sister Alexius dedicated her life to healing and service. A Sister of St. Joseph since 1949, she spent many years at Mercy Hospital — first in our Emergency Department and later in the surgical lobby, where she supported patients and families preparing for surgery with warmth and compassion.

Her legacy of care and kindness lives on in the memories of those who worked beside her and in the countless lives she touched.
Today, Monday, July 28, a funeral Mass will be livestreamed at 10 AM for her family in Ireland and all who loved her. The livestream will be available on the Sisters of St. Joseph page here: 👉 https://bit.ly/4fcxUN9

We encourage those who knew her — especially our Mercy nursing family — to visit the page and honor her beautiful life. The video will remain available to watch later.

May she rest in eternal peace. 💙

💙 Maria’s Story: A Reminder That It Can Happen to Anyone

For two days, Maria Ventura battled a severe headache. Concerned, her family took her to an MD Now Urgent Care, part of the HCA Florida Healthcare family. That decision changed everything.

She was transferred to HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, where a scan revealed a ruptured artery, prompting emergency brain surgery. Following a second procedure, Maria experienced a seizure that impacted her mobility and speech.

When Maria arrived at HCA Florida Mercy Hospital’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Center, she was completely dependent—unresponsive, unable to follow commands, and fully reliant on total assist. Progress was slow, but the rehab team never gave up.

Slowly, Maria became more engaged. Then came a turning point: she stood. Then she walked. And on discharge day, she left on foot, smiling and needing only light support.

Today, Maria continues her journey at HCA Florida Mercy Hospital’s Kohly Outpatient Rehabilitation, with a view of the ocean—and a future full of hope.

Her husband, Juan, shared their message:
“This could happen to anyone. Listen to your body and act fast.”

🌟 Celebrating 52 Years of Service: Aileen Sheppard 🌟

In 1973, Aileen Sheppard walked through the doors of Mercy Hospital as a young registered nurse. Today, she marks an extraordinary 52 years of dedication to HCA Florida Mercy Hospital and the countless lives she’s touched.

Over the decades, Aileen has served as a staff nurse, assistant head nurse, head nurse—and now as a clinical educator at Mercy’s School of Nursing, helping shape the next generation of caregivers. She even gave birth to her two sons at Mercy and now teaches students in the same hospital where her journey began.

💬 “Mercy has always felt like my second home – it’s where I grew professionally, where I had my children, and where I still find joy in coming to work.”

As we celebrate 75 years of Mercy, we honor remarkable individuals like Aileen whose lives have become part of our legacy.

🎗️ July is Fibroid Awareness Month

Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in or on the uterus. They’re common—especially among women of reproductive age—and can cause symptoms like heavy periods, pelvic pain, bloating, and frequent urination.

Many women live with fibroids without knowing there are treatment options available.

This month, we’re raising awareness to empower women with knowledge and encourage conversations about symptoms and care.

At HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, Dr. Ricardo Estape, Gynecologic Oncologist, works closely with women to diagnose and manage fibroids with compassionate, specialized care. Here, Dr. Estape speaks about abnormal bleeding which can be a cause of fibroids.

Let’s break the silence around fibroids and empower women with knowledge. You don’t have to live in discomfort.

• Severe headaches
• Severe abdominal or back pain
• Shortness of breath
• Vision changes, such as blurred or double vision

One in eight people, and one in six children, in North Florida live in households that may be food insecure, which means not having enough nutritious food to have an active, healthy life.

At HCA Florida Healthcare we care committed to to fighting food insecurity. Recently, HCA Florida Capital Hospital presented a $15,000 donation to Second Harvest of the Big Bend to help provide food to families experiencing hunger, bringing the total to $23,000 since 2023.

🌟 Patient Spotlight: Rosa Maria Pupo Castañeda 🌟

When Rosa arrived at HCA Florida Mercy Hospital by ambulance, she was semi-conscious, experiencing vertigo, vomiting, and numbness on the left side of her body. It was an emergency — but it wasn’t her first. In 2022, Rosa had survived a cerebral aneurysm. This time, it turned out to be a serious infection in the bone near her brain — caused by MRSA, a tough-to-treat staph bacteria.

Thanks to the expertise and teamwork of specialists including neurosurgeon Dr. Pablo Acebal, plastic surgeons, infectious disease experts, and a compassionate nursing staff, Rosa underwent a complex surgery that saved her life. She spent two weeks at Mercy, and says what stood out the most was the patience, kindness, and warmth of her care team.

🙏 Special thanks to nurses Bertha Mayo, Grether Llanes Delgado, and Leandro Chacon — and to all our caregivers who continue to lead with love and expertise. Rosa says, “Sometimes kindness and love go a long way when you’re having a health scare.” ❤️

At 64, she’s just grateful to be well — and to have received extraordinary care close to home.

📸 Pictured with Dr. Michele Astarita, one of the doctors on her care team who helped her heal.

🙏 From the Bahamas to Miami, Leon Wallace’s healing journey has been nothing short of remarkable.

A longtime preacher and current government official in the Bahamas, Leon traveled to HCA Florida Mercy Hospital for spine surgery with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Dan Cohen. In the days following his procedure, he required extensive assistance just to get out of bed or walk to the bathroom—limited by pain and weakness in his right leg.

But everything began to change once he began working with our dedicated inpatient rehabilitation team.

🗣 “Leon came to us needing significant support,” one of his therapists shared. “But with careful assessment and a personalized treatment plan, he started making meaningful progress. He was especially concerned about the 17 steps with only one handrail at his home—but through determination and daily 3-hour therapy sessions, he left Inpatient Rehab walking independently and climbing those steps on his own.”

Leon’s recovery was strengthened by the unwavering support of his son, Orthenel, who stayed by his side every step of the way.
We’re happy to share that Leon and Orthenel recently returned home to the Bahamas—grateful, stronger, and walking into their next chapter with confidence. 💪🌴

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the arms or legs. It’s easy to mistake PAD for other conditions like hip arthritis or spinal stenosis, which means often goes undiagnosed. Many people with PAD don’t experience symptoms at all. That’s why awareness of risk factors – such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and smoking – is crucial for screening.

Understanding the early warning signs is the first step toward timely intervention and better quality of life. In most cases, lifestyle changes, exercise and medications are enough to slow the progression or even reverse the symptoms of PAD, so talk to your doctor if you think you may be at risk.

🎉 Celebrating 75 Years of Compassionate Care

At HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, our Case Management team is a driving force behind every safe and thoughtful discharge plan — ensuring patients receive the right care, at the right time, in the right setting.

Meet Sherry White, Tammy Hankerson, and Mari Lambert — three dedicated case managers whose work reflects the very mission of Mercy.

“It’s all about continuity of care,” says Sherry, a registered nurse who has been at Mercy for 35 years. “We collaborate with physicians, patients and families to make sure each patient’s plan is not only appropriate, but also safe.”

Tammy, who began her career in Environmental Services and has now served in case management for nearly 28 years, adds: “We’re like family here. Everyone — from nursing to environmental services — plays a role in helping our patients heal.”

Mari Lambert, also a registered nurse, focuses on observation care, helping patients move smoothly through the system. With over 20 years at Mercy, she calls it her “second home.” Her connection runs deep — her middle name is coincidentally Merci, and her 102-year-old mother, Silvia, once attended our annual Mercy Mass with her each year.

👏 As we celebrate 75 years of serving our community, we honor Sherry, Tammy, Mari — and the entire Case Management team — for the compassion, collaboration, and commitment they bring every day.

Small businesses play an important role as job creators and are a pillar in communities nationwide. More than 4 million small business owners purchase healthcare coverage on their own and rely on Enhanced Premium Tax Credits (EPTCs) to keep premiums affordable.

⚠️Summer fun comes with risks, but simple precautions can help prevent injuries.

💧 Falls
➡️ Prevention: Use slip-resistant mats near pools and decks, and supervise kids closely. Consider wearing non-slip, supportive shoes.

🚗 Motor vehicle crashes
➡️ Prevention: Buckle up, stay focused and ensure proper vehicle maintenance before long trips.

🚴 Bicycle and pedestrian injuries
➡️ Prevention: Always wear a helmet when biking, use reflective clothing and follow traffic rules.

☀️ Heat-related illness
➡️ Prevention: Stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade. Avoid strenuous activity during peak sun hours (between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.), and remember that children, older adults and people with chronic illnesses are especially vulnerable to heat-related illness.

🔥 Burn injuries
➡️ Prevention: Take special care around grills, fire pits, fireworks and lawn equipment. Never refuel gas-powered mower engines while they’re hot, and always keep children at a safe distance.

From La Ermita to Leadership at Mercy 🙏✨

Meet Dr. Jorge Hernandez Canciobello, Medical Director of Hospitalist Services at HCA Florida Mercy Hospital. His journey is one of legacy, love, and purpose.

Sixteen years ago, he stood beside his father at La Ermita de la Caridad, not knowing the hospital next door would one day become his professional home. Today, he leads Mercy’s team of hospitalists from Valesco Physician Services, a part of HCA Healthcare. Specializing in the general medical care of hospitalized patients, these physicians care for patients across all units, from the ICU to rehab and maternity, coordinating treatment and ensuring a smooth, safe hospital stay.

Dr. Hernandez Canciobello’s story is deeply personal. His father, also named Jorge Hernandez, was a doctor in Cuba who sacrificed everything to give his son a future in medicine. Though he passed before seeing Jorge graduate from medical school, his influence lives on in Jorge’s work ethic, compassion, and dedication.

“I wake up at 4 a.m., just like my dad did. I’m proud of the care we provide. Mercy has become my family — I hope to retire here.”

💙 Join us in celebrating Dr. Hernandez Canciobello and the incredible hospitalist team that brings comfort and quality care to our patients every day.

Meet Kenny. He’s one of millions of Americans who are about to face a major increase in health insurance costs – and most don’t even know it yet.

Enhanced Premium Tax Credits (EPTCs) are currently helping 24 million people – including our patients – afford high-quality healthcare coverage through the insurance Marketplace (https://bit.ly/4eGjk0p). These tax credits are applied directly to people’s premiums, keeping coverage affordable and making healthcare more accessible. But unless Congress acts soon, these tax credits will expire at the end of 2025.

“When you get sick and you’re not rich, health insurance is absolutely essential. It doesn’t just make life easier, it makes life possible,” said Kenny. “Losing the healthcare tax credit would mean my monthly costs would go through the roof, and I wouldn’t be able to afford my treatments. I need Congress to extend the healthcare tax credit and give people in towns like mine a fighting chance.”

Without EPTCs, health insurance costs will skyrocket. Families may be forced to make heartbreaking choices – between keeping their health coverage or paying for food, rent and childcare. Learn how you can help protect access to care at https://bit.ly/3I0HxlA

Knee pain is a common symptom that can be caused by anything from sports injuries to arthritis. You can usually treat hip pain at home with self-care measures. Physical therapy and knee braces can also help relief the pain. But if the pain persists or gets worse, it might be time to see an orthopedic doctor.

According to the CDC, the rate of total knee replacements has increased in both men and women aged 45 and older with more than 790,000 procedures. Following a relatively short period of recovery, patients usually return to a high level of activity.

🌟 Employee Spotlight: Guy Gibson 🌟

For 19 years, Guy Gibson has been a dedicated member of the HCA Florida Mercy Hospital team. He began his journey as a transporter and later served more than a decade in the ER before transitioning into his current role as a hyperbaric technician.

But Guy’s connection to Mercy runs even deeper. “My mom, Margaret Gibson, worked here in HR,” he shared. “Before that, she worked in the hospital’s old daycare center. I used to visit her here when I was just a kid.”

To Guy, Mercy is more than just a workplace—it’s a community. “Especially in the hyperbaric department, we’re like a family,” he said. “I’ve been here long enough to see so many familiar faces over the years. There’s a real sense of connection.”
We’re proud to celebrate Guy’s years of service, dedication, and the heart he brings to everything he does. 💙
