🧘‍♀️ Q&A with Steve and Rita • JPY Community Spotlight ✨

Q: If you had to describe your yoga practice in one word, what would it be and why?
Rita: Decompression. All other issues melt away and become insignificant for the length of time on the mat.
Steve: Flexibility. Not just in relation to the body but to the mind. Don't worry about how you look or if you're able to practice as you always have or wish to. Do the best you can and don't worry about it.

Q: What advice would you give to your past self when you first started yoga?
Rita: Stop competing.
Steve: Have patience. Things come when they come. The practice grows on its on schedule.

Q: What do you love most about being part of this yoga community?
Rita: I feel like a peer with the JPY community regardless of age. I feel a genuine connection of friendship, respect, and humor among the yogis. It’s the highlight of my day to see the familiar faces.
Steve: The warm and friendly crowd. People are inquisitive and genuinely interested in who you are and what you're up to.

Q: What’s something surprising or fun about you people might not know?
Rita: I had a music career before moving to VA. I sang commercial ad’s for auto dealerships and banks that played on TV and radio in Oklahoma and beyond. Also was part of a rock band as lead vocalist doing covers and original music. We had a great following for a while.
Steve: I have a degree in art 🎨, specifically painting. I actively work on my art and currently have an exhibition up in Oklahoma, which can be reviewed on my website stevecrossett.com

Midweek check-in: which one do you need to hear right now? 💭

Here's the thing about positive thinking — neuroscience shows that the words we consume actually rewire our brains. ➡️ When we regularly expose ourselves to affirming thoughts, we strengthen neural pathways that support resilience + well-being.

(Your brain is literally learning to default to hope instead of worry!)

And if you need some peace to go with these words, come see us on the mat.

🧘‍♀️ Q&A with Zhabiz• JPY Community Spotlight ✨

Q: If you had to describe your yoga practice in one word, what would it be and why?
Zhabiz: Gift.I often experience an overwhelming feeling of gratitude and oneness during yoga practice. It is a gift for my body and soul.

Q: What advice would you give to your past self when you first started yoga?
Zhabiz: Do not box this experience to one that you know (exercise for the body). Do not name it and let it/watch it become what it will become.

Q:What do you love most about being part of this yoga community?
Zhabiz: A reliable chance to be present in the moment and to become one with a much larger spiritual energy. I value the chants and the harmonium beyond what words can describe.

Q: What’s something surprising or fun about you people might not know?
Zhabiz:I enjoy an occasional cigar and whiskey!

🧘‍♀️ Q&A with Manisha • JPY Community Spotlight ✨

Q: If you had to describe your yoga practice in one word, what would it be and why?
Manisha: Reflective. I say that because, as I think back over the years, as I have practiced yoga, the one thing I have not allowed myself is consistency. Being in the community at JPY, what I have gained is support, the ability to be consistent without judgment, internal or external. It is pure and simple support, and the confidence and ability to practice at my level, which has been made all the difference for me.

Q:What do you love most about being part of this yoga community?
Manisha: In the past, as I attempted to start yoga and make it a routine, I often gave up out of frustration. Finding this community has allowed me to show up for myself and my practice in a way I have not experienced before. I am able to honor where I am in this moment.

Q: What’s something surprising or fun about you people might not know?
Manisha: I love the outdoors! 🌳 Both nature and yoga guide me to be reflective and rooted in the present moment.

🧘‍♀️ Q&A with Don • JPY Community Spotlight ✨

Q: If you had to describe your yoga practice in one word, what would it be and why?
Don: Presence. Because it's about showing up to whatever my practice is that day - whether I'm feeling strong or stiff, focused or distracted. It's not about perfect poses.

Q: What advice would you give to your past self when you first started yoga?
Don: It's not about flexibility, it's about showing up.

Q:What do you love most about being part of this yoga community?
Don: I appreciate that it's one of the few places where being inflexible is perfectly acceptable - we're all working through poses together and nobody's pretending it's easy.

Q: What’s something surprising or fun about you people might not know?
Don: My introduction to yoga was on a military base in Afghanistan - probably the least zen environment possible, which makes every class here feel like a luxury.

🧘‍♀️ Q&A with Elyssa • JPY Community Spotlight ✨

Q: If you had to describe your yoga practice in one word, what would it be and why?
Elyssa: I would say the word "Intentional." Before JPY opened, I was pretty noncommittal to a studio and had gone for long stretches without practicing. But now with JPY I've come back to yoga and pilates with dedication and consistency.

Q: What advice would you give to your past self when you first started yoga?
Elyssa: Stick with it and you will see results.

Q:What do you love most about being part of this yoga community?
Elyssa: The people (both teachers and fellow students) are so wonderful and supportive.

Q: What’s something surprising or fun about you people might not know?
Elyssa: I love karaoke and look forward to each month's MTP class!
