Today, we celebrate 27 years of faith, service, and life-changing care for children with special needs across Middle Tennessee.

From our very first day to now, God has been faithful, as has this incredible community. Together, we’ve:

🚩 Developmental Red Flags: Torticollis & Plagiocephaly

Noticing a flat spot on your baby’s head? Or that they always look in one direction? These could be early signs of two common conditions we treat in therapy:

👶 Torticollis is when a baby’s neck muscles are tight on one side, causing their head to tilt or rotate in one direction.

🛏️ Plagiocephaly is when a baby develops a flat spot on the back or side of their head, often from lying in the same position too often.

🔍 Early signs to look for:
• Head tilts or always turns one way
• Difficulty turning the head during tummy time
• Flat spots on the back or side of the head
• Trouble latching or feeding on one side
• Baby avoids tummy time or seems fussy when doing it

💡Early detection and therapy can make a big difference. At Special Kids, we help families address these concerns with gentle, effective strategies that support your child’s development.

🤔 OT vs. PT. What’s the difference?
It’s a question we hear a lot, and we love helping families understand how both therapies support a child’s growth in different, but equally important ways! 💙

🔵 Occupational Therapy (OT):
Focuses on helping kids master everyday activities, like dressing, writing, feeding, and playing. OT builds fine motor skills, sensory regulation, and independence for success at home, school, and beyond.

⚪️ Physical Therapy (PT):
Helps kids gain strength, balance, coordination, and mobility. PT supports gross motor skills like walking, running, climbing stairs, or even just standing with confidence.

💡 Both therapies often work hand-in-hand to help kids gain independence, confidence, and functional skills, and both are tailored to meet each child’s unique needs.

☀️ ➡️ 🎒 From Summer to School: Easing the Transition
The lazy days of summer are winding down, and the school year is right around the corner. For many kids, especially those with special healthcare needs, transitions can be tough.

Here are a few simple ways to help your child shift from summer mode to school-ready routines:
🛏️ Adjust bedtime gradually– Move sleep and wake times earlier by 15 minutes every few days.
📅 Reintroduce structure– Use a visual schedule or morning checklist to ease back into routine.
🍽️ Practice lunch routines– Try eating lunch at the same time and packing school-style meals.
🎒 Talk through expectations– Review what school will look like (especially if there are changes) and talk about feelings.
📚 Create calm mornings– Prep clothes, bags, and breakfast the night before to reduce stress for everyone.
💙 Don’t forget grace– Transitions take time. Celebrate small wins and progress over perfection!

Therapy can also help support this change by building focus, independence, and confidence as kids return to the classroom.
