Teeth are made up of 4 different layers of tissue. Enamel is the clear, hard, outer layer of the tooth located above the gum line and is the hardest substance in the human body. Cementum is the hard, outer layer of the tooth below the gum line. Dentin is the middle layer of the tooth that surrounds the pulp and gives teeth their color. Dentin is actually denser and harder than bone. Pulp, located in the center of the tooth, is the softest layer and is made up of blood vessels and nerves.

Regular or excessive use of alcohol-based mouthwashes can dry out the mouth ultimately increasing the risk for cavities. Scientists are also concerned about it being a risk factor of oral cancer but studies haven't proven that yet. Most major mouthwash brands have alcohol-free versions.
