Congratulations to Mike Kelley of Visiting Angels Plant City, FL, and his incredible basketball team for bringing home the GOLD🥇 in the 60-65 age bracket at the 2025 National Senior Games, sponsored by Humana!

This year's games were one for the books - with approximately 12,500 athletes, it was the second largest in the 40-year history of the event!

Few things are more stressful than receiving a phone call that a family member is in the hospital. If your parent is elderly, a hospital admission can be even more worrisome. You want your senior loved one to be healthy and stay at home as long as possible, but a hospital admission can be the start of a series of health concerns and readmissions.

It’s natural to assume your loved one is out of the woods after successful surgery. It may initially make sense to spend all your time planning for the surgery.

❓Who is taking Mom or Dad to surgery, who is picking them up?
❓What medications, if any, is he or she allowed to take before surgery?
❓Are there any dietary restrictions?

These are the right questions to consider leading up to the surgery. But it's not until Mom or Dad is being picked up that reality sets in – life will be considerably more difficult for a while.

As people get older, their natural defenses begin to break down, leaving people age 65 and older more likely to develop health problems related to heat exposure. Seniors also are more likely to have a chronic medical condition that changes normal body responses to heat and are more likely to take prescription medications that affect the body’s ability to control its temperature or sweat.

Warning signs of a can include: high body temperature (103°F or higher), hot, red, dry, or damp skin, a fast and strong pulse, confusion. Headaches, dizziness and nausea are also indicators of heat-related illnesses. Heat strokes can be fatal if not recognized and treated in time.
