Shifting Perspectives, LLC

Shifting Perspectives, LLC ABOUT OUR COMPANY:

As a company, we seek to increase the quality of life of our children and their families.

Our purpose is to elevate diverse students‘ academic achievement on a global scale, equip educators with the knowledge to maximize their effectiveness, and provide parents with valuable resources to enhance their children‘s skills beyond the classroom. To accomplish this, we offer individualized speech & language services that are designed to meet the specific needs of your child. It's super important to us that we make every therapy session fun, so we use a variety of therapy tools to keep your child engaged and learning! For example, we always make time for sensory breaks, where your child can use his/her body to feel, move, and play with items that help to keep the body and mind regulated and ready to learn! We also know that it takes a village, so we always seek to work collaboratively with your family, as well as your child's school and other important people in your child's life when possible. This approach helps your child to learn quicker and to apply what he/she learns to many different environments. While we are passionate about delivering quality services to any child with speech & language needs, we specialize in servicing children and families with special needs. We have a decade of experience in working with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We also possess several years of experience in providing therapy to children diagnosed with Down Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Intellectual Disability (ID).

ABOUT THE FOUNDER:

Discovering her passion early in life, Dr. Tinita O. Kearney began working with children with autism in high school. She pursued this passion in her college years, attaining a Bachelor of Science as well as a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology. Tinita soon found that she also had a passion for research and earned her Doctorate in Speech-Language Pathology with a specialization in autism. Her research investigated pragmatic language issues affecting youth with autism and she continues to conduct meaningful research today! She is a published author, a member of many professional organizations and honor societies, an adjunct professor at Howard University, and has most recently been awarded the Award for Continuing Education (ACE) by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) for demonstrating a commitment to lifelong learning!

It's the kids for me!!

This week has been rough and the overwhelm has been on 💯, but this little pear just made my day.

A sweet kiddo who is not on my caseload, but who I always share a sweet smile and wave with each morning, brought me this pear with a bright smile and a, "Look, I have a pear! It's for you!" 🥹 (He's also passed by my office window about 3 times to spy the pear on my desk and grins hugely each time he sees it 😁).

The kids will always save the day 🥰🍐

There is SO much to be concerned about these days – especially with the current political climate and the hard-to-keep-up-with shifts that have come along with the new administration 😮‍💨

And since it can be too easy to get overwhelmed each day as an SLP when things are NORMAL, here’s a gentle reminder to actively look for the 'good' every day --for our students' sake and for our own mental health and peace (hello somebody!).

Because in the midst of the craziness, goodness still abounds.

Praying for ya'll! 🥰

This post is for me ya'll! It's an important reminder that I dont mind sharing publicly...

Call me an optimist, but very little shakes my faith, peace, and hope:

🚫Not the outrageous lack of diversity in the SLP field
🚫Not the obvious plot to strip me and my descendants
of our God-given and hard-fought civil rights
🚫Not the recent election results

At the end of the day, I cannot control what anyone else says, believes, or does (including how they vote). And that's OK. Because that's not my job. My only job is to:

✅️continue to have hope and faith
✅️show up as my very best self in every space I enter
✅️be the very person I'm praying the world has more of
✅️advocate for the changes I want to see (that part!)
✅️do all the above in love ❤️

I will always leave room at my table for others to feel, think, and believe differently than I do. But if you sit at my table, do so knowing that my agenda will be to let the love of God shine so brightly through me, that any hate you may bring will be choked out. Because love always wins. And my faith never dies.

This is the face of a happy school-based SLP 😁 For teacher appreciation week, free smoothies were on the menu, and after a less-than awesome therapy session, it made my day!

It's the small things 😊

Thank a teacher today (and every day, cuz they DESERVE IT!)

I'm excited to have been invited back as a vendor at the 2nd annual Adaptive Maryland Day festival! 🥳

Last year was amazing, and I'm looking forward to sharing Lola Koala and the fun language-building adventure she embarks on with more families! (Also, the music and food are always great! 😆).

🌟And don't miss my LIVE book reading this year! 🌟

I love the versatility of being an SLP!

Check out my convo with Tanner and learn more about how I've applied my skills set to:

🚀 help tons of kiddos and their families elevate their communication skills through my interactive daycare/ school-based programs
🚀 assist numerous educators in shifting their perspectives on best teaching practices for diverse learners through my educator training program
🚀 make reading fun WHILE specifically boosting fundamental language skills using my lift-the-flap board books
🚀 help graduate SLP students expand their knowledge and practical clinical skills ( including CRITICAL THINKING skills) to ensure they're prepared to serve the diverse needs of culturally and linguistically diverse groups via my graduate level workshop

And I'm sure I'm not done yet! 😆

The mission is to do all that I can to empower our future generations and that goal can be accomplished both inside and outside of the SLP field!

I don't know about ya'll, but I often check-in with myself to reflect and gauge how effectively I'm handling the stressors that come along with being a speech-language pathologist (ESPECIALLY one who works in schools 🥴).

The most important reason for this self-assessment is to ensure I remain in good mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health, but I also do it to ensure I'm able to offer my students the very BEST version of me -- because that's exactly what they deserve.

Today, my school's daily affirmation -- one that is recited by every kiddo each morning as a part of the morning announcements -- serves as a good reminder of why I show up as my very best self, no matter what difficulties, annoyances, injustices, drama (or even trauma!) await me, and why I use every therapy session to see, understand, and speak life to the WHOLE CHILD- not just address a speech or language disorder...

"There will never be another now - I will make the most of today. There will never be another me - I will make the most of myself. It is up to me to respect myself and others, to gain the knowledge I deserve, and to share it with the world."
