May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Check out this article I wrote for my local paper.
Sometimes it is difficult for an individual to know when to ask for help. How does one tell the difference between normal day to day struggles that can be worked through and when one should seek professional guidance. It is natural to reach out to people with whom we trust but sometimes those individuals do not have the skills necessary to help us work through a challenging situation. Sometimes even when we recognize that, we may still be hesitant to call on a professional for a variety of reasons. In spite of concerted efforts to destigmatize mental health issues the stigma remains for some. For some individuals the thought of talking to a stranger can be overwhelming and scary. Some individuals fear being labeled “crazy.” Others have simply avoided directly facing the difficulties so long that they fear opening that door with all that is built up behind it.
Modern technology has opened up access to information in just about everything. There is a YouTube video on how to fix just about any household item. Many articles and even books on dealing with issues like depression or anxiety are available online. Lately there has been an upsurge in videos on platforms like Tik Tok presented by peers struggling with issues as well as some “professionals.” While these videos can be informative, people need to have some caution about the source of the information and how it applies to their particular situation. There may be pieces of the information that resonate with an individual but it does not take into account the totality of the issue. It is important to seek a more thorough assessment with a licensed professional if you have concerns about your mental health condition. An assessment with a licensed clinician will help clarify your concerns and offer recommendations for the best course of treatment. Do not delay taking the first step to set an appointment as there may be a delay in scheduling as the demand for services remains high.
