Lois Steinberg (Ph.D., CIYT Advanced 2, C-IAYT) is one of the world’s most experienced yoga instructors awarded the Advanced 2 certification by B.K.S. Iyengar himself. Her 38 years of extensive studentship with the Iyengars includes annual participation in the general and medical classes at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India.

Lois’ teaching is infused with enthusiasm to share the knowledge and acumen that have come through her sustained practice and study of the tremendous work of B.K.S. Iyengar and his family. She strives to emphasize and exemplify whole-body transformation through the joy of regular immersion in practice. As a teacher, she is direct, dynamic, clear, focused, engaging, gently humorous, and an invaluable resource for understanding the healing potential of yoga. As a teacher of teachers, a hands-on mentoring approach is the focus of her IYCU teacher education program.

Lois is the author of numerous books and articles and is widely respected for and consulted regarding her considerable knowledge of therapeutics. She is sought after worldwide to instruct workshops, and serves as a member of and assessor for the Certification Committee of the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the US.

💻 Watch The Knees with Becky

🦵🏼Pain and discomfort in the knees in the immediate area may also lead to misalignment in other areas of the body. Maintaining strong and flexible knees through Iyengar Yoga asana is important for the balance of the body’s anatomical structure and physiological functions.

This class will address how to calm down knee inflammation and pain from tendon, ligament, and meniscus tears, cartilage issues, patella tracking disorders, osteoarthritis, Baker’s cysts, and general misalignment of the knees. We will also learn how to adapt poses that tend to aggravate the knees.

Ideally students should have: 1-2 sticky mats, 2-4 yoga blankets, 2-6 yoga straps, sand bags or 25 # plate weights. A bolster or other items can substitute as a weight. We will work with whatever props you have available.

Students in C-U may purchase props and books from IYCU through contact free pick up. Copies of Iyengar Yoga Asana Alternatives: the Knees is not required but is also available from loisteinberg.com.

✔️This class assumes regular, dedicated study with a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher for a minimum of two years, a thorough understanding of all basic poses, including their Sanskrit names, sutra study, prolonged practice of sirsasana and sarvangasana for ten minutes, and an established home practice in the various asana categories.

‼️Lois’ permission is required.

Nivine is currently a Level 2 CIYT. She moved from her home country Lebanon to Jamaica in 2006 and to Miami in 2014 where she discovered the Iyengar method and fell in love with its depth and precision. She believes Yoga is a powerful healing force that transforms physical and emotional pain. She credits Iyengar Yoga for healing her spinal injuries and enabling her to live with ease after suffering from chronic pain for many years.

She is passionate about connecting with people, whether sharing in their joy or being there for them through pain and suffering. She currently teaches at her home studio in Miami and is always excited to learn new skills and tools to better assist and guide students.

Her classes are fun and energetic and her patient, methodical style of teaching works well with both beginners and more seasoned Sadhakas. She encourages them towards continuous progress, regardless of ability level.

Nivine is certified in Ayurvedic digestion and nutrition. She loves to cook and share her Lebanese food and recipes.

Since the late 1980s Penny has studied Iyengar Yoga with Lois. During that time, she taught high school full time, and attended graduate school. Penny has since retired from the social studies classroom, and devotes more time to learning, practicing and teaching yoga under Lois’ guidance. Penny has attended lectures, workshops, and classes conducted by B.K.S. Iyengar, Geeta Iyengar, Ramanand Patel, Rajiv and Swati Chanchani, Stephanie Quirk, as well as regular study with Lois. Penny instructs the 50+ Intermediate classes and substitute teaches/assists in the Women’s Essentials and Yoga Therapeutics classes.

Vandana has a yoga journey spanning nearly two decades, including dedicated study of Iyengar Yoga since 2016 and mentorship with Lois since 2021. She is drawn to the method’s precision and the ways in which its disciplined approach fosters clarity and balance both on and off the mat.
