The Internal Medicine Residency program at Carle Foundation Hospital, the clinical site for the Carle Illinois College of Medicine and affiliated with the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Urbana, IL, is seeking PGY4 Chief Medical Residents for the 2020-2021 Academic year. Our program is comprised of 39 residents based at 3 participating clinical sites. The Chief Residents works closely with program leadership to manage residency operations, develop curricula, facilitate evaluation processes, and support recruitment. Other expectations include clinic teaching, leading Quality and Safety initiatives and teaching both students and residents. Opportunities to participate in clinical/ translational research are also available in partnership with Stephens Family Clinical Research Institute (https://carle.org/services/research/research-institute) and Beckman Institute (https://beckman.illinois.edu/).

Please see message from UI GME leadership...

On July 1, 2018, University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana residency programs in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry will transfer sponsorship to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. While the sponsorship will be a new development in our graduate medical education legacy, the University’s enduring commitment to you will remain unchanged. Together with Carle, we will deliver the highest level of educational, research, and clinical opportunities to our residents.
Key points:

Residents will have faculty appointments and teaching responsibilities.
We do not anticipate any changes to the educational program or access to educational resources.
Residents will continue to rotate at Carle Foundation Hospital, Christie Clinic, Presence Covenant Medical Center, and Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Center, as well as existing clinics with established faculty members.
The sponsorship transition is part of a larger plan for the expansion of graduate medical education in the Urbana-Champaign community, including:
The opening of fellowship programs in medical specialties

Dear Team IMRP & Alumni,
It is my pleasure to announce that Dr. Renato Alcaraz, Jr. has accepted the position of Associate Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. After his undergraduate studies in microbiology at the U of I Department of Microbiology, Dr. Alcaraz completed his medical degree at the University of East, Philippines. He completed postgraduate medical training here in the UI COM Internal Medicine Residency Program and continued as a Hospitalist at Carle Foundation Hospital. Dr. Alcaraz has extensive leadership experience associated with Carle and UI COM. He has been an elected member of the Carle Medical Executive Committee, the Carle Site Director for the UI COM IM residency, and the Associate Director of the Division of Hospital Medicine at Carle Foundation Hospital. His leadership in creating and coordinating the Carle Adult Medicine Multi-Disciplinary rounds has improved patient safety and promoted team-based care in the inpatient setting. He has won the most coveted Carle Teaching Attending of the Year award three times in a row. In this new role Dr. Alcaraz will continue performing the duties of the Carle Site Director. While his primary focus will be Assessment and Quality, he will be working very closely with Dr Thameem on Curriculum and Operations.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Alcaraz in this new role.
