What exactly is Wellness Dentistry?

The word wellness is everywhere these days. But what does it really mean in dentistry?

It's Not Alternative—It's Comprehensive Care
Wellness Dentistry isn’t about being “alternative” or “crunchy granola.”

It’s about a whole-body approach to care. It means recognizing that the mouth isn’t separate from the rest of the body—and empowering our patients with real knowledge so they can make the best choices for themselves.

When we talk about wellness, we’re talking about good, comprehensive, personalized dentistry that helps our patients truly get healthier—and keep their teeth for life.

Upstream vs. Downstream
One of my favorite analogies comes from Dr. Daniel P***a:

“Everything from the neck up is upstream. Everything below is downstream.”

If you have issues upstream—like mouth breathing, teeth crowding, cavities, gum disease—they flow downstream and impact the whole body.

If you’re only treating the downstream symptoms but ignoring the root causes in the mouth, you’ll never achieve real wellness for your patients.

Being Part of Their Health Team
We’re not working in isolation.

Our patients have teams: medical doctors, chiropractors, acupuncturists, nutritionists, and more.

They need a Wellness Dentist on that team.

We’re the ones who can help them see the connection between oral health and overall health. We guide them, ask the right questions, and help them make the links they might never see on their own.
