🌟 At New View Autism, every goal we set has a purpose. 🌟

When we create goals for our learners, it’s never a one-size-fits-all approach. Here’s how we ensure every goal is meaningful, realistic, and affirming:

✅ We listen to families. Your priorities and hopes for your child are central to our planning.

✅ We consider what’s developmentally appropriate. We focus on skills that truly support growth for their age and stage, not pushing unrealistic expectations. This also applies to how to support emotional regulation.

✅ We use standardized assessments. These tools help us understand where your child is right now and track their progress over time.

🌱 We build on strengths. Every child brings a unique set of skills, interests, and ways of experiencing the world. Our goals are never about “fixing” a child, they’re about supporting their growth while honoring who they are.

✅ We embrace neurodiversity-affirming practices. We respect stimming, teach self-advocacy for sensory needs, and celebrate what makes each child unique while building important life skills.

🔁 We keep it flexible and collaborative. As your child grows, so do their needs and interests. We regularly revisit and adjust goals in partnership with you to ensure they stay meaningful and empowering.

Every goal is designed to help your child connect, communicate, and thrive— all while feeling safe, understood, and supported. 💛

✨ Because when goals are meaningful, progress feels natural, empowering, and joyful.

💙 Child Development in Action 💙

What Play Looks Like at Age 3 vs. Age 5

At New View Autism Clinic in Urbandale, we know that play isn’t “just play”. It’s how kids explore, connect, communicate, and grow. And while developmental milestones can help us understand general trends, we always recognize that every child’s journey is valid, valuable, and uniquely their own.

So what does play often look like at different ages?

🧸 At Age 3:
* Play tends to be parallel: children may play next to peers but not always with them.
* Pretend play starts to blossom (like feeding a stuffed animal).
* Kids may repeat actions they enjoy and find comfort in routines.

🎭 At Age 5:
* Play often becomes more cooperative: taking turns, sharing ideas, and creating imaginary stories together.
* Problem-solving shows up in play (like building with blocks or navigating playground games).
* Kids may shift between roles and themes in their make-believe worlds.

But here’s the most important part: There is no single “right” way to play. As long as everyone is safe and having fun, go with it! You can model other types of play but keep it easy and no pressure.

Some kids may prefer structured play, sensory activities, or solo exploration and that’s okay. At New View, we support each child’s strengths and interests while offering opportunities for growth and connection, on their timeline.
By respecting how each child plays, learns, and relates to the world, we’re not just supporting development—we’re honoring who they are.

💛 Play is powerful. Play is personal. Play is a window into a child’s inner world.

🌟Why We Model Before We Prompt: Supporting Natural Learning at New View Autism Clinic

We believe that every child learns best in a way that feels safe, empowering, and connected to their natural interests. That’s why we use Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBI) rooted in child-led, relationship-based strategies—always with a neurodiversity-affirming approach.

✨ One of the key strategies we use is modeling before prompting. Why?

Because learning through seeing and experiencing is a natural part of how humans grow. Instead of immediately prompting a child to do something, we show them first. Whether it's how to play with a toy, use a word, or engage in a new activity. This gentle, respectful approach allows space for curiosity, imitation, and self-driven learning.

💡 Here’s why modeling matters:
* It honors each child’s autonomy and pacing.
* It reduces pressure and supports intrinsic motivation.
* It mirrors how learning happens in everyday relationships.
* It invites engagement, not compliance.

When we model first, we’re saying: “You’re capable. You’re invited. Let’s explore this together.”

At New View, we celebrate each child’s unique way of seeing and interacting with the world. Modeling before prompting helps us create inclusive, responsive environments where neurodivergent children thrive—just as they are.

🎉👏🏼 FIVE YEARS of MACI MAGIC! 👏🏼🎉

Today we’re celebrating ✨Maci’s 5-year anniversary✨ at New View! She’s been with us since the very beginning and we truly wouldn’t be who we are without her!

From the very beginning, Maci has been the one who steps in without being asked, supports everyone around her, and somehow manages to keep this whole operation running like clockwork.

Our learners light up when they see her, our families know they’re in good hands, and the rest of us are just lucky to have her on our team. This ship runs smoothly because Maci helped build it.

Help us show some love for FIVE amazing years! Drop a 🎉 in the comments and tell Maci how awesome she is!

🌟Autistic Pride Day: Celebrating Neurodiversity Together 🌟

Today, we join our amazing autistic children, their families, and the wider community in celebrating Autistic Pride Day—a day to recognize and honor autistic people as valuable, important, and proud members of our world. 💙

At our clinic, we see every day how beautifully diverse autistic minds are. From unique ways of thinking and learning to joyful expressions of stimming and special interests—autism is not a deficit. It is a difference, and one worth celebrating. 🧠✨

Neurodiversity means:
✅ There’s no one “right” way to think, learn, or communicate
✅ Every child deserves respect, support, and acceptance
✅ Autistic children don’t need to be “fixed”—they need to be understood

On this day, we invite our community to:
💛 Celebrate autistic voices
🧡 Learn from autistic adults and self-advocates
💚 Create inclusive, sensory-friendly, and safe spaces
💜 Affirm the worth and dignity of every autistic child—just as they are

Let’s build a future where all neurodivergent children grow up knowing they are seen, supported, and celebrated.
To our autistic kids:You are loved. You are brilliant. You belong.

🌟 Exploring Assistive Technologies for Autistic Children 🌟

Today’s tech innovations are transforming how children with autism communicate, learn, and engage with the world. 💡 Whether it’s enhancing social interaction, supporting sensory needs, or boosting learning, assistive technology is opening new doors. 🧩💬

Here are some key tools making a difference:

🔹 AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) Devices – From picture-based apps like Proloquo2Go to speech-generating tablets, these tools empower nonverbal children to express themselves.

🔹 Sensory Tools – Noise-canceling headphones, weighted blankets, and sensory apps help regulate sensory input and create calming environments.

🔹 Social Skills Apps – Tools like "Social Express" and "Emotions & Feelings" teach emotional recognition, conversation skills, and empathy in a fun, interactive way.

🔹 Wearables & Smart Tech – GPS trackers for safety, and even smartwatches with visual schedules and reminders help build independence.

🔹 Virtual Reality (VR) – VR platforms are now being used to simulate social scenarios, helping children practice real-life interactions in a safe space.

Technology isn’t just a tool — it’s a bridge to connection, confidence, and growth. 💙 Let’s continue exploring and advocating for inclusive tech that meets every child where they are.

🧩 What Is Stimming? Let’s Talk About It! 💙

You might notice a child flapping their hands, rocking, spinning, or repeating words or sounds. This is called stimming—short for self-stimulatory behavior—and it’s a completely normal and often helpful part of life for many kids with autism.

✨ Why Do Kids Stim? Stimming helps regulate emotions, express excitement, reduce anxiety, or cope with overwhelming environments. It’s their way of interacting with the world—just like you might tap your foot or twirl your hair!

👐 Let’s Be Supportive Instead of trying to stop stimming, let’s understand it. If it’s not harmful, there’s no need to intervene. Creating sensory-friendly spaces and being accepting helps kids feel safe and empowered.

💬 Every child communicates in their own way—and stimming is one of them.
Let’s celebrate neurodiversity and make room for all the ways kids express themselves. 🌈

🌟 Choosing the Right ABA Clinic for Your Child 🌟

Not all ABA therapy is the same — and your child deserves a clinic that sees them as an individual. 💙

Here’s what to consider when comparing providers:
🔹 Do they value your family’s goals?
🔹 Is the environment welcoming & sensory-friendly?
🔹 Are goals developmentally appropriate?
🔹 Do they use play-based, individualized teaching?
🔹 How is communication with families handled?
🔹 Who’s actually working with your child — and how often?

🚩 Red flags include: one-size-fits-all goals, high staff turnover, compliance-focused methods, lack of transparency, and ignoring a child’s voice.

👀 Ask questions. Take tours. Trust your instincts. The right fit matters.
