One month into the school year. 📚 The new schedules are set, the first wave of assignments has hit, and the initial adrenaline might be fading. How are you really doing?

If you're feeling more overwhelmed than energized right now, you are not alone. The end of September is often when the true weight of the semester begins to settle in. This is the perfect moment for a mental health check-in.

Remember to:
Schedule real breaks. Downtime isn't lazy; it's necessary for your brain to recharge.
Protect your sleep. It's the foundation of your ability to learn and cope with stress.
Connect with someone. Talk to a friend, call home, or reach out to a trusted mentor.
Be kind to yourself. You don't have to have it all figured out. Learning to manage new challenges is part of the process.

Meet Kirk, LISW!

With deep roots in Des Moines and nearly four decades of experience, Kirk brings incredible wisdom and a down-to-earth approach to our team. A graduate of Drake University and the University of Iowa, he has been a licensed therapist in our state since 1987.

Kirk's philosophy is refreshingly simple: his best ‘trick’ is to have no tricks at all. He is a passionate believer in Positive Psychology, focusing not just on the absence of illness, but on helping you build a full, productive, and meaningful life.

He considers himself a generalist with a special enjoyment for couples counseling. When he's not in the office, you might find him tending his backyard orchard or rediscovering the joys of motorcycle riding.

If you’re seeking a therapist with a wealth of experience and a genuine, straightforward style, Kirk is here to help. Schedule your appointment through the link in our bio!

In a world that rushes, let's practice a moment of slowness.Mindful eating is a simple way to ground yourself in the present moment. It’s not about rules or diets; it's about connecting with your food, your body, and your senses.

Try this the next time you eat something:

Pause: Before you begin, take one deep breath.

Look: Notice the colors, shapes, and textures on your plate.

Smell: Inhale the aromas. What do you notice?

Savor: Take a small bite. Chew slowly and try to identify each flavor. Put your fork down between bites.

Listen: Pay attention to your body’s signals of fullness and satisfaction.

Need more than a mindfulness technique? Call (515) 412-5112.

As the days here in Iowa start getting a little shorter, it's the perfect time to talk about Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

For many, the shift from late summer to fall brings more than just cooler weather. It can bring on a wave of depression that lasts through the winter months. This is more than just the "winter blues"—it's a real and treatable condition.

Common signs of fall/winter SAD include:
-Low energy and persistent fatigue
-Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
-Changes in sleep patterns (usually oversleeping)
-Craving carbohydrates and changes in appetite
-Feeling down, hopeless, or withdrawn

The good news is that you can prepare. Now is the time to build routines and a support system to help you navigate the months ahead. You don't have to face it alone.

If this sounds familiar, our therapists are here to help you develop a personalized plan. Reach out to us today. Call (515) 412-5112.

September is a busy month for mental health!

Firstly, may your Labor Day weekend be filled with the kind of peace that honors all the hard work you do—seen and unseen.

Secondly, September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month. This month, and every month, we want to extend a message of hope, connection, and support to our Iowa community.

Your life has immense value. Your story is important. And you are not alone.

Su***de prevention is something we can all be a part of. It starts with breaking the silence, checking in on one another, and knowing where to turn for help. It's about creating a community where no one has to struggle in silence.

➡️ For immediate, 24/7 confidential support, please call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

For ongoing support in navigating difficult thoughts and building a life worth living, therapy is a safe and effective space. Our team is here to listen without judgment and walk alongside you.

Let's look out for each other, Iowa.

💬 According to recent trends, more men than ever are embracing therapy and leading the way in redefining strength as emotional intelligence. Known as “therapy bro summer,” it's changing cultural expectations.

Therapy is not weakness. It’s self-respect, growth, and courage.

To men in Des Moines and beyond: seeking help shows humanity, not hardness.
