He began his education in a one-room schoolhouse at Border Plains Primary School and later attended Central Webster Community School. From an early age, Richard was deeply involved in his family’s farming life—helping raise livestock and contributing to the daily operations. He was also a proud and active member of Webster County 4-H, where he developed leadership skills that stayed with him throughout his life. After graduating high school, Richard earned a two-year degree from Fort Dodge Community College, where he especially enjoyed playing baseball. He continued his education at the University of Northern Iowa, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Marketing, and later went on to complete a Master’s Degree in Secondary Administration from Drake University.
On August 17, 1968, Richard married the love of his life, Diane Martinson, at Lanyon Covenant Church in Lanyon, Iowa. Together they made their home in Perry and raised two children, Ryan and Melissa, creating a life rich in love, laughter, and strong family values.
Richard was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who cherished time with his family above all else. He found joy in cheering on the Iowa State Cyclones, and loved spending time outdoors fishing, golfing, and hunting with family and friends. He and Diane shared a love of travel and treasured their winters spent in Florida.
Richard began his professional life as an educator at Perry Community High School, where he taught Marketing and led the DECA program. After ten years in education, he transitioned to a successful 30-year career in banking. He retired as President of Wells Fargo Bank in both Perry and Jefferson, remembered by colleagues and clients alike for his integrity, kindness, and unwavering support of others’ success.
Deeply committed to his community, Richard served in leadership roles across numerous local organizations, including the Perry Lions Club, Perry Industries, Perry Economic Development, and the Wiese Foundation. He also served on the boards of the Dallas County Hospital and Habitat for Humanity. Through his service, Richard worked tirelessly to strengthen and uplift the Perry community — always striving to make a positive, lasting impact.
