In New York State, it is required that all children be placed in a rear-facing position until they reach the age of 2, with the recommendation that they continue to do so for as long as possible.

All children under the age of 8 are required to be secured in a child restraint system when traveling in a motor vehicle. Typically, children who are 4 years old or older may be eligible to ride in booster seats, depending on the height and weight specifications of the seat.

Children should remain in a booster seat until the lap and shoulder belts of the car seat appropriately fit the child. Booster seat use reduces the risk for serious injury by 45% for children ages 4 to 8, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association. Additionally, children under the age of 13 should ride in the backseat.

Please call 315-798-5461 or send an email to CarSeatSafety@oneidacountyny.gov for more info.
